Research Engineer, Data Infrastructure

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.

A high quality data pipeline is a central ingredient to building artificial intelligence. We are looking for a Research Engineer in Data Infra. In this role, you will design and implement a “data engine" that uploads data collected by the NEO fleet, makes the data easy to train and query on, and redeploy new models back to the fleet.

Responsibilities:

  • Design on-robot triggers that determine if and when robot data should be uploaded.
  • Automate ETL pipelines to make fleet-wide data easily queryable and available to train on.
  • Automate data movement between a hybrid on-prem research cluster + cloud datacenter.
  • Build frontend tools for visualizing and automating labeling of web-scale datasets.
  • Develop machine learning models to automatically label and organize our datasets.

Must-Haves:

  • Getting general-purpose robots to work in the home is just about the hardest problem one can work on. We are looking for people with the courage to tackle unsolved technical challenges with an intense work ethic.
  • A production-oriented engineering mindset
  • Strong software engineering skills with experience in building distributed systems
  • Expertise in Python and experience with distributed computing frameworks
  • Experience building distributed ETL pipelines in Apache Beam, Spark, or Ray

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Have built a petabyte-scale data-engine to handle a fleet of robots.
  • Experience with the following technologies: Rust, Go, Vector Databases, Ansible, Docker
  • Familiar with computer vision algorithms

Compensation

At 1X your work and results will be rewarded with a total rewards package consisting of a base salary, stock options and benefits. Base salary range is $130,000 to $250,000. Your actual salary will be based on your knowledge, skills and experience.
