Youth Development Specialist

3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic is a community-based agency providing youth in the Bayview Hunters Point with medical and behavioral health services that encourage them to make decisions that support their health, safety, and development. 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic also manages a number of successful Transitional Age Youth (TAY) housing stabilization programs and one of the city’s few Youth Access Points.

The Youth Development Specialist (YDS) will ensure that the youth center is a welcoming and vibrant space. The YDS will support and coordinate the daily after-school programming and actively outreach for all 3rd Street programming and services


Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate & facilitate focus groups & youth development programs
  • Maintain an energetic, welcoming, and cohesive environment for the youth in programs
  • Availability to work weekends, evenings and be the primary person available during drop-in hours; matching the 3rd Street Youth Clinic
  • Assist clients and their families in accessing community and organizational resources 
  • Ability to provide information regarding all programs run by the organization and direct youth to through the proper channels for assistance. 
  • Ability to fill in for team members; in other HYD programs as necessary
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, supervision meetings and any other meetings as assigned along with providing client review (as necessary)
  • Lead weekly departmental meetings occasionally
  • Recruit and Interview youth regularly for enrollment into programs
  • Recruit and interview all guest speakers for programs prior to allowing them to speak to any youth cohort. 
  • Maintain a relationship with the primary volunteer servicer on a regular basis to ensure guest speakers fit the curriculum topics. 
  • Conduct outreach regularly in the community (off-site) with youth, with staff, or alone.
  • Update curriculum for the YOS program for both FALL and SPRING sessions according to the department’s timelines and standards
  • Update curriculum for the YOS program for the SUMMER (SHEP) program sessions according to the department’s timelines and standards
  • Deliver Content (curriculum) to each cohort independently in a way that is easily understood for ages 12-16 years of age.
  • Regularly update the Apricot system (case notes, attendance, etc.) per the organization's standards.
  • Maintain sign-in sheets, client logs and records, and any additional records as deemed appropriate
  • Attend Training as required by the agency and/or direct supervisor
  • Supervise youth and program interns
  • Assist the Youth Development Program Manager with a Capstone Assignment for Interns helping with YOS/SHEP
  • Regularly meet with the Youth Development Program Manager about intern performance, etc. 
  • Assist Director with grant tracking and reporting for the YOS program (i.e.: delivering and collecting digital surveys from youth for data tracking purposes)
  • Create and manage social media campaigns quarterly
  • Maintain professional standards of performance, demeanor, and appearance at all times (i.e.: respond to texts/calls received on a  work phone, respond to emails within 24 hours of receipt) 
  • Maintain a creative, team-building, cooperative approach to job performance and seek to bring a constructive problem-solving orientation to all tasks with the team and Director
  • Maintain an awareness of the agency’s mission and work to promote the positive individual and social change goals it embodies
  • Exercise discretion and professional judgment at all times, with particular attention to confidentiality 
  • Other duties as assigned.


About you: 

Education & Experience:

  • Associates or Bachelor of Arts in a relevant field (Child development, public health, education, etc.)
  • Experience in working with youth
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus
  • Must be able to be an independent worker
  • 1 year of experience working with youth or a combination of education and experience


Physical requirements:

  • Requires ability to lift, transfer, push/pull, maneuver, and reposition 25 lbs. 
  • Ability to reach, bend, and walk.
  • Ability to comprehend complex materials.
  • Ability to speak and write English clearly and accurately.
  • Availability to work weekends, and evenings and be the primary person available during drop-in hours; matching the 3rd Street Youth Clinic 


General info: 

  • This position is a salaried, exempt, and full-time role.
  • This position is located in our Youth Center in the BVHP neighborhood in San Francisco
  • This position reports to the Director of Health & Youth Development.


Compensation and benefits:

  • This position has an annual salary of $68,640.
