About Aalo Atomics
Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we’re rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world’s first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.
About the role
The Senior Mechanical Engineer – Machine Design / Equipment Design will take ownership of mechanical equipment and system design, from concept through production and implementation. This role requires deep experience (15+ years) in machine design, equipment layout, structural/mechanical details, manufacturing integration, and cross-functional leadership. You will be instrumental in designing, specifying, and delivering major mechanical systems within a high-reliability, safety-driven environment.
What you'll do
- Lead the mechanical design of machinery, equipment systems, and major assemblies: concept generation, detailed design, integration with manufacturing and installation.
- Develop layouts, 3D models, assemblies, and detail drawings using advanced CAD/PLM tools; generate equipment specifications and bills of materials.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, installation, commissioning, and test teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, installable, maintainable, and meet performance goals.
- Perform mechanical design trade-studies (materials, fabrication methods, cost, reliability, maintainability) and lead design reviews.
- Ensure equipment designs comply with applicable codes, standards, safety regulations, materials and fabrication requirements (e.g., pressure boundaries, structural members, welding, dynamic loads).
- Mentor and lead junior engineers and designers.
- Provide technical leadership in equipment design for modular and factory-based manufacturing of major mechanical systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline).
- 15+ years of mechanical equipment / machine design experience, ideally in high-reliability industrial, manufacturing, or energy sectors.
- Proven track record designing large mechanical systems, equipment, or heavy machinery.
- Expertise in CAD/PLM tools (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo) with strong capability in 3D modeling, assemblies, and drawing generation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design for manufacturability, materials selection, welding/fabrication methods, installation/maintenance considerations.
- Excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills; ability to interact across functions (manufacturing, procurement, commissioning, testing).
- Comfortable in a dynamic, rapid-growth environment, and able to lead design efforts under schedule and budget constraints
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in modular/factory-based manufacturing environments (e.g., skid-mounted systems, modular equipment builds).
- Prior involvement in the nuclear, power, or heavy-industrial sectors.
- Familiarity with regulatory/licensing environment for energy equipment.
- Experience with heavy equipment installation, commissioning and field validation.
