Mechanical Engineer – Structural Mechanics Design & Analysis

About Aalo Atomics

Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we’re rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world’s first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer specializing in thermal and structural design & analysis, with deep familiarity with nuclear and pressure-boundary codes and standards (including ANSI/AISC N690 and ASME Section VIII). The successful candidate will perform thermal/structural modelling and analysis, design heavy structural/mechanical components, and ensure compliance with applicable codes for safety-related systems.

What you'll do

  • Perform structural mechanic design and analysis (including FEA/CFD coupling, stress/fatigue/seismic/vibration) for mechanical systems and structures.
  • Develop and validate modelling approaches (thermal–structural coupling, dynamic loads, multi-physics as required) to support design decisions.
  • Ensure designs comply with ANSI/AISC N690 (safety-related steel structures for nuclear facilities) and ASME Section VIII (pressure-vessels and pressure-boundary equipment) standards.
  • Produce mechanical design documentation: analysis summaries, design reports, drawings, BOMs, materials selection.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, fabrication, installation, commissioning teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, maintainable, and satisfy performance/safety/manufacturability trade-offs.
  • Support test planning, validation, and link analysis results to prototype/test outcomes.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of structural/thermal design processes and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or similar discipline.
  • 4-10+ years (or depending on your requirement, specify) of experience in thermal/structural design & analysis (ideally for heavy mechanical/structural systems).
  • Demonstrated experience with FEA and/or CFD modelling of mechanical/structural systems.
  • Hands-on experience interpreting and applying ANSI/AISC N690 for safety-related steel structures in nuclear context.
  • Experience interpreting and applying ASME Section VIII for pressure-boundary equipment.
  • Solid understanding of structural/mechanical design for materials, fabrication, welding, dynamic loads, fatigue/vibration.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; able to work across engineering disciplines and interface with manufacturing/fabrication teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in nuclear industry, advanced reactors or factory-modular manufacturing of large mechanical/structural systems.
  • Experience with elevated temperature materials, irradiated environment design, or specialty structural systems.
  • Familiarity with structural steel fabrication methods, welding/NDE, heavy structural steel design for nuclear facilities (ANSI/AISC N690 context).
  • Proficiency in CAD/PLM tools and mechanical analysis tools (e.g., NX, Nastran, Simcenter, STAR-CCM+).
  • Experience developing and maintaining design standards, workflows, or libraries for thermal/structural design.
