Position Description


Advanced Energy United (United) is currently seeking a highly energetic, smart, self-starting candidate with a background in legislative work, issue advocacy, coalition building, and/or organizing to lead United’s legislative and political engagement in California.


The Senior Principal will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with legislative and administrative decision-makers in California, managing and executing on United’s California strategy, and working collaboratively with other United team members to achieve successful policy outcomes that expand markets for the advanced energy industry.


This work will also include educating decision-makers and candidates about advanced energy and facilitating United member company engagement with decision-makers and candidates. Specific areas of focus may include energy affordability, clean energy and transmission infrastructure, grid resilience and flexibility, transportation and building electrification, and western regional market formation. Candidates will need to have the ability to travel occasionally to meet with United staff and members, coalition allies and stakeholders, and public officials.



Responsibilities 

  • Work collaboratively with Advanced Energy United policy team members to develop and implement strategies to accelerate California’s transition to 100% clean energy and electrified transportation and meet short- and long-term policy objectives as part of United's policy portfolio. These could be legislative, administrative, or regulatory, or a mix of all three.
  • Work with Advanced Energy United member companies to develop policy positions and reach consensus on positions on key issues.
  • Manage lobbyist relationships on the ground and their engagement in legislative strategy and execution.
  • Organize member opportunities for direct decision-maker engagement including lobby days, legislator and candidate education, earned media, and participation in legislative, regulatory, and administrative processes, as needed.
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, and key legislative and administrative staff. Engage in coordination and advocacy efforts with coalition allies in support of clean energy goals.
  • Create reports, presentations, fact sheets, and other written and visual materials needed for education and advocacy efforts, draft comments, and deliver verbal presentations as necessary.
  • Work with our communications team to identify opportunities for Advanced Energy United to seek earned media coverage. This may include drafting press statements, doing media interviews, writing blog posts, participating in webinars, and creating opportunities to showcase advanced energy.
  • Travel on an as needed basis (up to 30%) for advocacy days, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and other efforts on behalf of Advanced Energy United.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, engineering, political science, or public policy preferred, or comparable experience; master’s degree in a relevant area is a plus.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in legislative policy development, campaign work, or organizing in the energy sector; working with business leaders is a plus.
  • Interest in energy and transportation issues and an understanding of the importance of policy advocacy to advance an organizational agenda.
  • Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to independently draft clear, comprehensive, and persuasive written documents appropriate for intended audiences.
  • Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Performance-oriented individual with a strong work ethic, demonstrated initiative and commitment to achieving goals.
  • Must have a sense of humor, recognize there is always more to learn, and not take oneself too seriously.
  • Must be willing to travel.
