About the role


We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Statutory Accountant to join our growing finance team. This role is critical in ensuring compliance with state and local tax regulations, preparing and filing statutory and regulatory reports, and supporting the company’s annual financial audit and tax return process. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of sales tax, property tax, and annual filing requirements, and is experienced in tax research and reporting.


What you'll do


Sales and Use Tax Compliance

  • Prepare, file, and remit monthly/quarterly/annual sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Maintain sales tax exemption certificates and ensure proper documentation.
  • Monitor changes in sales tax laws and update internal systems accordingly.

State and Local Tax Registrations

  • Register the company in new states as business activities expand.
  • Maintain active business licenses and state accounts in good standing.
  • Track state nexus exposure and recommend action to ensure compliance.

Annual Filings and Support

  • Prepare and file annual reports and franchise tax returns for state entities.
  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of federal and state income tax returns in conjunction with external tax advisors.
  • Support the annual external financial audit by preparing tax-related schedules and documentation.

1099 Reporting

  • Gather and validate vendor data for year-end 1099 filings.
  • Ensure timely and accurate issuance of Forms 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, and other applicable information returns.

Property Tax Compliance

  • Prepare and file annual business personal property tax returns.
  • Manage property tax assessments, appeals, and payments.

Tax Research and Advisory

  • Perform technical research on tax laws, regulations, and guidance impacting the business.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes at the federal, state, and local levels to assess potential tax impacts and proactively communicate risks and opportunities to leadership.

General Accounting & Reporting

  • Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with external tax advisors, auditors, and state agencies as needed.
  • Continuously improve processes to increase accuracy and efficiency in compliance activities.
  • Support month-end close processes and assist with a variety of accounting tasks and special projects as assigned

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and tax compliance requirements.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • 1–3 years of experience in tax accounting, statutory accounting, or a related field.
  • Experience working with multi-state tax compliance preferred.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and tax software (e.g., Avalara, Business Central, or similar).
