Overview
Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) is looking for a Communications Manager to support and expand the organization’s media presence. The Communications Manager will help deliver ARI’s message to media outlets, draft new written content for the organization, track and analyze key metrics for media engagement, and provide communications support to the Policy and Government Affairs team as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage proactive and reactive media communications for a portfolio of emerging tech issues.
- Draft, edit, and pitch op-eds, landing opinion pieces in national news outlets on behalf of ARI.
- Lead media monitoring for ARI, including quarterly metrics and daily press clips.
- Draft and distribute press releases, policy statements, and advisories.
- Collaborate with ARI’s policy, government relations, and coalitions leads to design strategic media campaigns in support of policy objectives.
- Build and manage relationships with media outlets that fall within your portfolio of issues and serve as their main point of contact for press inquiries
- In collaboration with the Digital Director and Coalitions Director, support and plan for virtual and in-person events with a media presence.
- Assist the Digital Director in maintaining ARI’s website.
Qualifications
Required
- 3-4 years of experience working in communications for an advocacy group, think tank, multi-client consultancy, or in government.
- Demonstrated written communications skills, including experience writing and developing content for a national figure or organization.
- Ability to synthesize complicated policy issues into digestible products.
- An understanding of AP Style and a strong eye for detail.
- On-the-record experience interacting with media outlets.
- Eager to work in a fast-paced environment and excited to help shape the conversation around AI.
- Ability to manage a diverse workload.
Preferred
- A background in technology and innovation policy.
- Existing relationships with reporters covering biosecurity and national security beats.
Compensation, Benefits, and Location
This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Relocation assistance may be available. ARI maintains a flexible hybrid work schedule (working in-person Tuesday-Thursday and remote on Monday and Friday).
The salary range for this role is $105,000 - $125,000, commensurate with experience.

Anticipated Hiring Process

- Phone Screen: Phone 1:1 conversation with our recruiter.
- Hiring Manager Interview: Virtual 1:1 conversation with the Hiring Manager.
- Hiring Exercise: A roughly 2-hour hiring exercise. Candidates who submit an exercise will be compensated for their time.
- Final Interview: In-person panel interview at our office.
- Reference Checks: We’ll ask for references from the top candidate(s) to help us confirm and/or make a final decision.
