Working at Ampersand

Ampersand Biomedicines is a Flagship Pioneering company creating better medicines that work precisely where needed in the body and nowhere else. We're building a pioneering team that shares a drive to make a difference and works well in a fast-paced environment in a highly collaborative manner. At Ampersand, every employee has the opportunity to learn about the most cutting-edge innovations, take chances, support their colleagues, and be generous with their ideas and opinions.

Ampersand is currently seeking a highly motivated biologist with a strong background in cell/molecular biology to contribute to projects focused on the discovery and development of protein therapeutics.  The role will focus on cell-based and ex-vivo approaches to designing and understanding our biologic therapeutics.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for executing experiments to characterize activity, mechanism of action, and therapeutic potential of early-stage biologics. This role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative and highly integrated team where you will contribute to multiple projects across the Ampersand pipeline.  This is an on-site, lab-based role in South Boston with a planned move to Watertown in 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support discovery programs through development and execution of screening/mechanistic/functional assays focused on activity of multi-specific antibodies to help advance candidate therapeutics within a variety of disease targets.
  • Work independently on experimental design, execution, interpretation and presentation of experimental results to validate hypotheses related to project needs.
  • Read and adapt scientific literature and internal protocols to accomplish assignments and demonstrate broad and versatile technical expertise and problem-solving. Implement and innovate new experimental protocols/techniques as needed.
  • Interact and collaborate with biology and other multidisciplinary teams for cross-functional coordination.
  • Compile and document experimental data; manage electronic laboratory notebook, centralized databases, and/or spreadsheets for diligent record keeping.
  • Impact projects mostly through lab-based activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Biological Science or related field with 2+ years of hands-on experience in biotech or pharma.
  • Excellent skills with primary cell culture (sterile technique, handling challenging cell types), stable and transient protein expression, fluorescence/luminescence-based assays and flow cytometry in a medium to high-throughput setting.
  • Expertise in disease areas including immunology, metabolism, and fibrosis is a plus.
  • Familiarity with FlowJo, Incucyte software, ELN and Prism is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively present results and scientific data to team leaders and within cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to learn new skills and apply them in a fast-paced environment with flexibility to manage changing timelines.
  • Enthusiastic about playing a pivotal role in the dynamic and multidisciplinary environment of a small biotech.

Ampersand Biomedicines is committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
