Electronics Designer I

AEM has a well-established reputation providing specialty aviation solutions. Based out of Kelowna, British Columbia, AEM is a global leader in the design, development, and manufacture of special-mission aircraft audio communication and loudspeaker systems, mission radios, avionics consoles and caution panels utilized throughout the world. We are the first FAA-certified at-the-gate airframe crack detection sensor solution for commercial airline operators. AEM is a wholly owned subsidiary of SMS Canada Corp, under our parent company:  Structural Monitoring Systems plc (ASX: SMN).

The Electronics Designer I role is a full-time permanent position that involves designing, developing, testing, and qualifying avionics communication products for AEM.  In this role, you will provide technical support to the designer II, senior designer or program manager, and explore and evaluate new techniques to resolve issues related to avionics communication product design.

 

About the Role

  • Assist with schematic design, PCB layout, mechanical design, integration, as well as production and validation activities for avionics communication systems.
  • Perform diagnostics and testing under the guidance of the senior designer and apply appropriate corrective action for errors in avionics communication products.
  • Assist in analyzing the performance of avionics communication products and implementing agreed improvements, with a focus on meeting industry-specific standards.
  • Learn and apply appropriate software and/or hardware used by AEM for avionics communication product design and development.
  • Collaborate with R&D team members and other AEM departments to ensure high-quality outputs of avionics communication products.
  • Write status reports and project updates as needed for avionics communication products under the guidance of the senior designer.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of the avionics communication design process.
  • Ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations and standards for avionics communication products, such as RTCA DO-160, DO-178, and DO-254
  • Document avionics communication design specifications, test results, and other relevant information, including requirements traceability to ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations.
  • Stay up to date with advances in avionics communication design technology and best practices, including attending industry conferences and training sessions.

 

About the Candidate

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with hands-on experience gained through group projects or co-op opportunities, or an Electronics Technologist Diploma accompanied by at least two years of relevant experience working as a Technician in the avionics industry.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic and PCB layouts is required.
  • CAD experience (Altium, AutoCAD, Draftsight, etc.) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Firmware Development in embedded control environments using C and/or C++ programming languages is an asset.
  • Assisting in project designs from concept to functional and environmental testing and preparing the production documentation.
  • Knowledge or experience within the avionics industry is an asset.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to sit/stand for long periods of time.
  • A strong work ethic with a positive approach to working with others.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination is required.
  • Ability to successfully pass the security assessment of employees who need to examine, possess, or transfer controlled goods or technology is required.
