Outreach Team Leader (LA)

The Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) is an environmental justice organization with deep roots in California’s Asian immigrant and refugee communities. Since 1993, APEN has built a membership base of Laotian refugees in Richmond and Chinese immigrants in Oakland, and more recently, Asian Americans in South Bay LA. Together, we have fought and won campaigns to make our communities healthier and just places where all people have the resources we need to live full, dignified lives. We are growing our local roots and building power to make decisions at the state level that have real local impact. By building an organized movement, we’re leading a transition away from an extractive economy based on profit and pollution and toward local, healthy, and life-sustaining economies that benefit everyone.

POSITION SUMMARY:

APEN seeks to hire a team of outreach workers to participate in APEN’s civic engagement programs. This is a temporary part-time position. This program’s goal is to increase the civic participation of low-income Asian immigrant communities in California. The Outreach Team Leader will be leading a team of Outreach Workers in talking to voters and convincing them to complete a survey on environmental justice issues that impact poor people, immigrants, and communities of color in California.

This position is part-time starting Sept 3rd and ending on Oct 16th, 2025 with days/times to be determined, but tentatively scheduled for Monday through Sunday 3pm-7pm. The hourly rate is $30. This position will not include benefits with the exception of sick pay and an internet and phone stipend at the end of the program. This job is based in South Bay/Harbor Los Angeles and requires walking in neighborhoods.

PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervise and schedule a team of outreach workers.
  2. Complete daily reports based on results from the outreach team.
  3. Provide support and troubleshooting for technology used by the outreach team.
  4. Train outreach team on policy, technology, and canvass skills.
  5. If able, support interpretation of team meetings and activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Commitment to the mission and principles of APEN and environmental economic, racial, gender justice.
  2. Fluent in English, bilingual/biliterate in an Asian language preferred.
  3. Strong motivation and adaptability, including the ability to work under pressure and deadlines.
  4. Basic computer skills, ability to complete web forms.
  5. Experience with running a phonebanking program, doorknocking outreach and supervision experience preferred.
  6. Able to work our full canvass shifts Tuesday- Saturday (3PM to 8PM) including additional weekend hours. Exact hours to be finalized.
  7. Have access to a laptop and a smartphone for our door knocking program. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  1. Experience working in Asian immigrant communities 
  2. Able to give and receive constructive feedback
  3. Multilingual (Asian language) applicants preferred (Chinese, Tagalog and/or Vietnamese)


ACCESSIBILITY AND WORKING CONDITIONS:


This position will require applicants to work on a computer daily for long periods of time, and collaborate with staff through Zoom, email, and other digital platforms.

 

This position is expected to be in person 5 days a week with some travel and zoom meetings. In addition, this position will also follow APEN’s COVID safety policies and protocols regarding in-person work. Masks are required to be worn in APEN offices and indoor events, with the exception of eating and drinking. All employees also are required to be vaccinated as part of our safety policy or be subject to weekly testing.

 

APEN will continue to closely monitor local and state health officials guidance around COVID and any additional guidelines around safety for people to return to offices and gather in-person as needed. 

 

This position requires some work during irregular hours including on nights and/or weekends, and will require on-site work and some travel between sites. 


This position will not require carrying or moving heavy equipment, regularly ascending or descending a ladder, or standing or sitting for long periods of time. This position will not require working in hazardous or unusual conditions such as outdoors in inclement weather.
