LA Volunteer Organizer

The Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) was founded in 1993 to bring together a collective voice among the diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities to develop an alternative agenda for environmental, social and economic justice, and fight for the right of all people to a clean and healthy environment in which to live, work and play. In pursuit of this vision, APEN revolves around five strategies: building grassroots power, strengthening organizing capacity in API communities, forging strategic alliances, and advancing proactive agendas and policies towards systemic change. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Volunteer Organizer will be responsible for recruiting and building a base of volunteers to be active in our organizational activities. The Volunteer Organizer will oversee the turnout and participation of volunteers and activists in our upcoming door knocking efforts to outreach to Asian American voters about key issues happening in the community.


PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, turnout, and conduct reminder calls to activate volunteers in existing base
    • Phone bank past volunteers and contact lists to mobilize to Volunteer Days
    • Email and text follow-up when needed
  • Outreach and recruit to new volunteers
    • Contact professors and allies to set up class presentations, tabling, etc.
    • Help reach out to ally organizations to join our volunteer door knock days
  • Plan and Lead Volunteer Days
    • Work with CE Lead and other Staff to develop outreach and mobilization plans.
    • Work with digital comms staff to promote volunteer opportunities.
    • Plan and Prep for Trainings
      • Train and prep facilitators and helpers.
  • Prep materials for door knock events
  • Train, supervise and help manage volunteers at outreach events
  • Complete daily reports based on results from the outreach team
  • Provide coaching and monitoring of outreach progress, including contact rate and ID rate
  • Provide support and troubleshooting for technology used by the outreach team.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to the mission and values of environmental, economic, racial, gender justice.
  • Fluent in English, bilingual/biliterate in an Asian language preferred.
  • Strong motivation and adaptability, including the ability to work under pressure and deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills, ability to complete web forms.
  • Experience with running a phone banking program, door knocking outreach and supervision experience preferred.
  • Able to work part-time during the week, 8 hours a day (10AM - 6PM) including some weekend hours. Exact hours to be finalized.


This position is part-time, no more than 25 hours a week, roughly 21 days total, starting as early as June 2nd, 2025 and ending June 30th, 2025 with the exact schedule TBA. The hourly rate is $28. This position does not include benefits and health insurance.


ACCESSIBILITY AND WORKING CONDITIONS:


This position will require applicants to walk and canvass neighborhoods in Los Angeles. This position requires you to have access to a smartphone/device during the work shift (smart devices can be provided by APEN if needed, stipends will be provided for use of personal devices). 


This position will be an in-person position. Candidates will need to be able to work in-person at one of our offices located in Los Angeles. This position will follow APEN’s COVID safety policies and protocols regarding in-person work. Masks are required to be worn in APEN offices and indoor events, with the exception of eating and drinking. All employees also are required to be vaccinated as part of our safety policy or be subject to weekly testing.


APEN will continue to closely monitor local and state health officials guidance around COVID and any additional guidelines around safety for people to return to offices and gather in-person as needed. 


This position may require work during irregular hours including on nights or weekends.


This position will not require carrying or moving heavy equipment, regularly ascending or descending a ladder, or standing or sitting for long periods of time. This position will not require working in hazardous or unusual conditions such as outdoors in inclement weather.
