Important information regarding the security clearance process: Non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for a personnel security clearance. The clearance adjudication process is an examination of a sufficient period of a person's life to make an affirmative determination that the person is an acceptable security risk. Eligibility for access to classified information is predicated upon the individual meeting personnel security guidelines. The adjudication process is the careful weighing of a number of variables known as the whole-person concept. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law as a Schedule I drug in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), meaning any use of marijuana is illegal under federal law, regardless of state and local governments' legalizing or decriminalizing use of marijuana. This applies to recreational marijuana use, medical marijuana use, as well as the use of cannabidiol (CBD) products. Adherence to federal laws prohibiting marijuana use is evaluated in the security process.
