The Team

The Astra Test Team is responsible for verifying that flight hardware will successfully operate in space. We execute testing for increasingly high-throughput production of our thruster modules and related subsystems, plus continual development testing for new programs and capabilities. To make this all happen, we also develop and operate state-of-the-art facilities for testing plasma thrusters in conditions that simulate the space and launch environment - high vacuum, thermal, vibration, and shock. 

The Opportunity 

As a Senior Test Automation Engineer at Astra, you will play a critical role in building and scaling our test infrastructure to support the development and production of our Astra Spacecraft Engine (ASE) Hall-effect thruster modules. You’ll own the design and implementation of automated test systems, enabling fast, accurate, and reliable validation of hardware to ensure mission success in orbit.

This role blends hands-on test engineering, software development, and system integration. You’ll be responsible for commissioning test facilities, creating scalable automation frameworks, and mentoring junior engineers—all while working cross-functionally to support both R&D and production testing efforts.

How You'll Fulfill Your Mission

• Prioritize Safety: Work safely around hazards including cryogenics, pressure systems, and heavy equipment—predicting, mitigating, and managing risks to prevent injury.
• Execute Testing: Perform functional and performance tests on flight hardware including plasma thrusters, propellant feed systems, and power electronics.
• Stand Bring-Up: Commission, maintain, and improve advanced test stands, data acquisition systems, and ground test infrastructure.
• Build & Assemble: Fabricate and assemble test fixtures and setups using CAD models, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings.
• Troubleshoot: Diagnose and resolve electrical and mechanical issues in test setups and hardware systems.
• Document Rigorously: Develop and maintain detailed test procedures, reports, and SOPs to ensure consistency and traceability.
• Mentor & Guide: Support the growth of early-career engineers and test technicians through hands-on coaching and technical leadership.

Why We Value You

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in test engineering, fabrication, or system integration—including hardware/software interface work
• Proficient with bench test equipment: multimeters, power supplies, oscilloscopes, and current/voltage probes
• Experience working with fluid systems, pressure vessels, and related safety protocols
• Skilled in Python and LabVIEW, with experience using NI hardware and data acquisition systems
• Willingness to support critical test operations, including evenings or weekends as needed
• Excited to be part of a team launching real hardware into space
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering—or equivalent hands-on experience in a technical lab or industrial environment

Desired Multipliers 

• Familiarity with space systems and/or vacuum systems
• Experience soldering and crimping wiring harnesses
• Ability to interpret test results and independently design new test plans
• Proactive in suggesting design improvements based on test outcomes

The pay range for this role is: $150,000 - $185,000 per year
