Physical Therapist

Position Summary  

The Physical Therapist delivers high-quality, evidence-informed rehabilitation and injury-prevention services to Bay FC players. Working within an integrated medical and performance team, this role contributes to the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries; supports return-to train & to-play progression; and helps maintain player availability, health, and team performance throughout the season. The position requires close collaboration with team physicians, therapists, athletic trainers, coaching, and other performance staff to ensure a holistic approach to player care. 
 

Responsibilities 

Player Treatment & Rehabilitation 

  • Provide on-site evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions for all players.  
  • Perform physical therapy services for the players in collaboration with the Head Athletic Trainer/Assistant Athletic Trainer as directed by the Team CMO/Team Physician(s). 
  • Design and implement individualized treatment plans incorporating manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, modalities, and return-to-play progression. 
  • Conduct post-surgical and long-term rehabilitation programs in collaboration with the team physician and athletic training staff under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer. 
  • Apply evidence-based practices to evaluate and modify interventions for optimal recovery and performance outcomes.  
  • Contribute to return-to-play planning, rehabilitation and testing as directed by Head of Medical and Performance. 
  • Monitor daily player status and contribute clinical insights to IDPs. 
  • Monitor any changes in mental, psychological, and physical health of the players through daily interactions and discuss with/refer to appropriate Team Medical Staff as indicated. 

 

Injury Prevention & Performance Integration 

  • Collaborate with medical and performance staff to integrate injury prevention with training and load management. 
  • Conduct movement screenings, biomechanical assessments, and performance tests to identify injury risk. 
  • Provide player education on movement quality, recovery strategies, and injury-prevention habits to optimize player availability. 

 

Training & Matchday Coverage 

  • Deliver sideline coverage for training sessions, home and away matches, pre-season, and camps. 
  • Provide acute injury evaluation, first aid, emergency response, and recovery support. 
  • Ensure appropriate pre-training/match preparation and post-session recovery processes. 

 

Documentation & Compliance 

  • Accurately document all player assessments, treatments, progress notes, plan of care, physician diagnoses, and return-to-play dates in the electronic medical record (EMR). 
  • Maintain up-to-date medical and participation records for all players in compliance with League and Club policies. 
  • Contribute to clear handovers and interdisciplinary communication to support smooth transitions across rehab and training environments. 
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with other Team Medical Staff members, Players, Coaches, other Team personnel and League staff. 
  • Maintain professional liability insurance 
  • Compile reports as required by the League. 
  • Comply with all League medical policies and protocols. 
  • Abide by all local, state, and federal laws and regulations specific to their profession, codes and standards of their governing bodies, and all applicable League Rules and Team policies (e.g., informed consent, medication management, OSHA standards, etc.) 
  • Maintain and inventory Physical Therapy supplies and clinical equipment. 

 

Club Contribution & Innovation 

  • Stay current with emerging rehab methods, movement strategies, and clinical techniques relevant to elite football. 
  • Identify opportunities to enhance rehab quality, streamline workflows, and improve interdisciplinary collaboration. 
  • Support the medical and performance departments’ ongoing development and contribute to special projects as needed.

Requirements 

  • Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent advanced degree in physical therapy/rehabilitation) 
  • Successful completion of National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) 
  • Current unrestricted state license to practice PT in California 
  • Current CPR/AED & BLS certification 
  • Board Certified as a Sports Clinical Specialist (SCS) / Residency Trained 
  • Additional recommended certifications: BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Corrective Exercise Specialist (NASM-CES) and/or Performance Enhancement Specialization (NASM-PES) 
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a licensed Physical Therapist, with minimum 3 years’ experience in a sports environment caring for elite-level athletes (i.e., collegiate, professional, Olympic) 
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel with the team. 

 

Compensation 
The anticipated salary for this role is starting at $120,000. Starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.
