Beam is now simplifying and modernizing a robust suite of ancillary employee benefits through an intuitive digital platform, self-service tools, AI-powered pricing, support from Beam’s helpful representatives, and a unique Beam Perks™ rewards program. This winning combination allows us to deliver a simple, smart, and wellness-focused experience for brokers, employers, and members.

What We're Looking For:

We’re looking for a Staff Platform Engineer to drive the evolution and maturation of our production platform and developer experience. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and platform architecture, with a focus on building systems that help other engineers move faster, safer, and with less cognitive load.

This is a highly technical, hands-on role with significant ownership and responsibility. You will proactively shape the platform’s direction, recommend and implement forward-looking improvements, and champion industry best practices and robust procedures—ensuring the platform evolves strategically rather than reacting to immediate issues. AI will be a key component of the platform’s future, helping identify opportunities for automation, eliminate repetitive work, and enable engineers to move quickly and confidently.

What You Will Do:

  • Tactically apply agentic and generative AI to optimize platform development, operations, and growth
  • Collaborate with application teams to identify pain points and bottlenecks in workflows and implement solutions that streamline the developer experience
  • Design, implement, and maintain platform infrastructure that ensures high availability, predictable performance, and operational correctness, while balancing reliability, cost, and simplicity.
  • Drive platform and infrastructure change hands-on, from architecture through implementation, setting the technical direction and standards.
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to other platform engineers, helping raise overall operational maturity and shaping engineering culture.
  • Lead design and architectural discussions for complex platform systems, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and alignment with business goals.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of platform processes and developer experience, fostering innovation and adoption of effective tooling.

What Skills Will Help You Be Successful:

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering high-quality, maintainable, and scalable software.
  • Deep expertise in full-stack or backend systems, with strong proficiency in modern web applications such as Ruby and React/TypeScript.
  • Proven experience designing scalable, high-performance architectures, internal platforms, or developer tooling.
  • Experience with AWS core services and containerized workloads (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, etc.) and cloud infrastructure best practices.
  • Experience identifying and applying AI or automation opportunities across the platform to improve efficiency, reliability, and developer experience, while thoughtfully evaluating trade-offs and benefits.
  • Excellent problem-solving and technical leadership skills, with the ability to make forward-looking architectural decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of leading technical discussions and aligning teams on platform strategy and decisions.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and platform-driven best practices.
  • Familiarity with modern engineering practices, agile methodologies, and CI/CD pipelines.
