Shop Lead Technician

Summary of the Position

The Shop Lead Technician is a highly skilled and experienced technician responsible for performing complex diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on a wide range of heavy equipment sold by Best Equipment. This role will involve providing technical guidance and mentorship to other technicians, ensuring quality workmanship, and contributing to the overall efficiency and productivity of the repair shop. The Lead Technician is expected to be a subject matter expert, capable of troubleshooting intricate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Advanced Diagnostics and Troubleshooting:
    • Conduct thorough and accurate diagnostics on complex equipment malfunctions, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools, software, and technical manuals.
    • Identify root causes of failures and develop effective repair strategies.
    • Interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics to pinpoint issues.
    • Perform advanced testing and adjustments on engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other critical components
  1. Complex Repairs and Maintenance:
    • Perform intricate repairs and overhauls on heavy equipment according to manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
    • Replace and repair major components, including PD blowers, fans, water and hydraulic pumps, cylinders, and transfer cases
    • Perform welding, fabrication, and machining tasks as needed for repairs.
    • Conduct preventative maintenance services, including inspections, fluid changes, filter replacements, and component adjustments.
  1. Technical Leadership and Mentorship:
    • Provide technical guidance, support, and mentorship to junior and mid-level technicians.
    • Provide direction and direct training during the new technician onboarding process.
    • Assist technicians with complex diagnostic and repair procedures.
    • Providing detailed information to assist in technician performance reviews and to support the development of technician development plans.
    • Share knowledge and best practices to enhance the team's technical capabilities.
    • Lead specific repair projects or teams as assigned by the Service Manager or Service Writer.
  1. Quality Control and Documentation:
    • Ensure all repairs and maintenance are performed to a high standard of quality and safety.
    • Inspect completed work to verify proper functionality and adherence to specifications.  Including additional areas of deficiency on the equipment.
    • Accurately document all diagnostic findings, repairs performed, parts used, and labor hours in the shop's management system.
    • Quality check all completed machines. Confirm that the repairs are finished and that the machine is ready to return to work. 
  1. Shop Operations and Safety:
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
    • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures.
    • Properly train technicians on use and maintain shop tools, equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
    • Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
    • Assist with shop organization and workflow as needed.
  1. Continuous Learning and Improvement:
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest heavy equipment technologies, repair techniques, and industry trends through training, workshops, and technical publications. Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
    • Identify opportunities for process improvement within the service department.
    • Have the ability to relay and train the service team on  new practices and techniques
  1. Customer Interaction (Occasional):
    • Interact as needed with customers to explain repair procedures or findings in a clear and understandable manner.
    • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with customers.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training in heavy equipment repair preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of hands-on experience in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Proven expertise in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, transmissions, power trains, and related components.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic software, tools, and equipment.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Welding and fabrication skills.
