Senior Controls Software Engineer

Who We Are:

We are an early-stage, maritime defense technology startup backed by top tier investors. Our team is designing and building autonomous and highly producible ships that can serve multiple missions on the open ocean.

The Role:

You’ll play a central role in designing and implementing the brains and reflexes of our autonomous ships real-time embedded control systems that operate reliably in dynamic and often unpredictable maritime environments. You’ll architect and test the software that ties together navigation, propulsion, sensors, payloads, and contingency systems, ensuring precise control, system resilience, and mission success.

You won’t just be tuning PID loops—you’ll be pushing the limits of autonomy with advanced control algorithms, real-world constraints, and hard-earned field data.

We are seeking someone who thrives as part of a purpose-driven team. We're a small, mission-driven team shaping the future of maritime autonomy. We work hard, we test often, and sometimes we get soaked by sea spray—and we love what we’re building.

What You’ll Do:

  • Architect and implement controls software for various systems on the ship.
  • Develop embedded software that integrates with the overall ship operating system.
  • Write low-level device drivers and interfaces for a variety of sensors and actuators.
  • Build scalable subsystems for state estimation, sensor fusion, contingency management, and more.
  • Design simulation and test fixtures for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) validation.
  • Support vessel manufacturing, integration, and deployment in the field.

Who You Are:

  • BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field—or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in developing simulation environments for controls validation, including modeling of physical systems and testing against real-world scenarios.
  • Experience designing fault-tolerant control systems that account for sensor/actuator failures, degraded modes, and dynamic reconfiguration in safety-critical environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in modern control algorithms (e.g., MPC, adaptive control, nonlinear control) and their successful deployment in real-world systems, with a proven track record of delivering robust, high-performance solutions in production environments.
  • Familiar with communication buses/protocols such as CAN, UART, SPI, I2C, Ethernet, and others.
  • Ability to bridge theory and practice—adept at translating advanced control concepts into practical, maintainable software that performs under real-world constraints.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, energized by building systems from scratch, and eager to get hands-on with hardware.
  • A team player who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with a “get it done” mindset.
  • Eligible for a U.S. Secret security clearance.

What We Offer:

  • Incredibly high caliber teammates. You’ll work directly with our co-founders Rylan, Scott and Austin.
  • A fast-paced, creative working environment that offers a lot of room for ownership and growth.
  • Significant equity package.
  • Generous PTO, medical, and dental coverage.
  • Ability to make a difference and work on a meaningful mission that protects America and our Democracy.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All hiring is contingent on eligibility to work in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or transfer visas for applicants.
