Position Summary  

The MEP BIM Coordinator’s role is to understand and communicate how BIM affects project workflows, deliverables, and model management throughout the Company. The primary responsibility is to work with the Sr. BIM Manager to manage and coordinate BIM standards development, implementation, coordination, and enforcement on all related BIM projects, files, and models, for the MEP practice group. This includes the development of a work plan/roadmap for the development, implementation, and quality assurance checks needed for full BIM integration and coordination between all company disciplines. Assisting the design teams with modeling and construction documentation is also expected.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Typical functions of this role include, but are not limited to: 

  • Responsible for assisting the Sr. BIM Manager to develop and implement BIM workflows and driving standard usage of BIM and Revit within and outside the firm 
  • Assist the Sr. BIM Manager with the use of BIM/Revit software firm-wide, including installing, configuring, maintaining, and supporting all BIM installations, as well as analyzing and solving BIM issues as they come up 
  • Provide end-user training, support, including trouble shooting of families, files and projects, and advice for all Revit users in the organization 
  • Support project teams by managing and creating content library files and templates, creating and enforcing standards, and evaluating project models with the direction of the Sr. BIM Manager/Engineering Technical Manager 
  • Support with project start-up and set up, coordination, help develop team strategies for effective delivery of quality documents, thereby ensuring that each one is set up correctly, including BIM360/ACC cloud setups 
  • Attend and actively participate in project site visits which will include domestic travel for scanning projects which will include scanning facilities to include exterior, interior, and traversing a ladder to access ceiling HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems 
  • During project visits, 10-14 hour days may be required to get complete scans in one trip 

Software 

  • Coordinate with the Sr. BIM Manager and Business Operations Director to select BIM software products, including but not limited to licensing compliance, incorporating new version releases, maintaining legacy software, and customizing software for specific firm needs 
  • Manage the implementation of supporting software and plug-ins for MEP BIM with the Sr. BIM Manager 
  • Evaluate new BIM-related software and technologies for the MEP discipline 
  • Stay informed on best practices for the use of Revit, AutoCAD, and BIM 
  • Stay informed on other BIM-related software products and their interaction with Revit 
  • Ability to use and/or learn Dynamo and Python for efficiency and the automation of standard processes as deemed appropriate by the Sr. BIM Manager/Engineering Technical Manager 

Standards 

  • Responsible for assisting with the creation, maintenance, implementation and enforcement of BIM standards with the Sr. BIM Manager
  • Creation and maintenance of the template files to ensure standards 
  • Provide support for plotting and electronic file submissions  
  • Automate routines in BIM to support standards and productivity
  • Provide quality control for completeness and adherence to company standards of all shop drawings produced 
  • Assist in developing and enforcing BIM documentation and workflow process standards 
  • Train and oversee the day-to-day activities of BIM users to ensure BIM standards are maintained in the creation of BIM models 
  • Assist in all pertinent QA/QC processes required by the project team for their modeling efforts 

Construction Documentation  

  • Assist MEP project teams with redlines and markups of construction documentation during the design phases and CA phases of a project as needed 
  • Coordination of models used by all project disciplines in projects including, but not limited to, coordination with those discipline modeling leads to ensure quality documentation and the use of all company standards 

Leadership  

  • Participate in the BIM Discipline group and ensure regular communication and coordination among BIM/Revit users 
  • Report on the company’s current and projected state regarding MEP BIM implementation 
  • Create and lead deployment strategies for the MEP BIM implementation effort  
  • Assess and evaluate the firm’s current workflow and strategies 
  • Create an implementation plan (identify team members, the project, the goals, etc.)  
  • Execute the plan, install the software, keep templates updated, get training, etc.  

Support and Training 

  • Provide hardware and network support as it relates to MEP BIM production
  • Troubleshoot problems primarily for the MEP team and be available for other discipline requests for support 
  • Liaise with vendors, software developer support staff, and other support channels 
  • Provide fundamental and intermediate training to colleagues on all MEP BIM software and support the Sr. BIM Manager with architectural BIM software support when needed
  • Conduct continuing education on MEP BIM processes and new BIM technologies 
  • Provide technical orientation/onboarding to new hires regarding MEP BIM tools
  • Attend conferences, seminars, and workshops for MEP BIM, bringing back best practices and disseminating the information to appropriate teams  
  • Assist project teams in MEP BIM project setup, project work modeling and detailing  
  • Assist/create Revit families in response to project needs  
  • Create project schedules with content 
  • Manage and distribute coordinated digital documents to the project team  
  • Communicate with subcontractors to receive, coordinate, and update all electronic models where required by the project(s) 

Qualifications and Experience 

Required Education, Experience, and Technical Skills:  

  • Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Architectural Engineering, or Computer Aided Design and Drafting or a similarly situated field of study 
  • Must have a valid non-expired Real ID, Enhanced Driver’s License, or Passport  
  • Previous experience in an architecture, engineering, construction, or related professional service firm  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams 
  • Expert level proficiency in utilizing Revit to apply BIM Modeling knowledge to various architectural and engineering projects 

Preferred Education, Experience, and Technical Skills:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, Architectural Engineering, or Computer Aided Design and Drafting or a similarly situated field of study 
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience working in a BIM modeling capacity 
  • Minimum of 5 years of Construction Document creation and/or management experience 
  • Excellent communicator, organizer, and engager
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with changing demands and priorities 
  • Initiate and enjoy independent problem-solving and working in the gray areas  
  • Successfully incorporate feedback and manage multiple points of view 
  • Demonstrate excellent language and written communication skills 

 

Working Environment 

When not working from a home office, remotely, or onsite at a project location, most of this role is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment. On occasion, there may be exposure to loud office or technical machinery during its operation. 

  

Additionally, this role is required to attend site visits. During site visits, there may be exposure to a variety of environmental conditions, such as being outdoors, being in indoor non-temperature-controlled environments, and maneuvering into tight spaces to scan existing heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, piping, and fire protection systems. Long hours are required during site visits and project travel, and they may include 10-14 hour days. 

 

Physical Demands 

  • Sitting/Standing: This role is generally sedentary, performing sitting work utilizing technological office equipment, including a laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, scanners, copiers, and fax machines. 
  • Walking: This role requires the ability to move about inside the office to access technological equipment required for the role. During site visits, this role requires the ability to traverse various project sites and buildings that will have uneven surfaces.   
  • Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: This role may require stooping to reload printer trays with print paper. During site visits, this role requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl to set up scanning devices that will scan an existing structures heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and piping systems. 
  • Using Hands/Fingers: This role constantly operates technological office equipment such as laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, and scanners, copiers, and fax machines. 
  • Talking/Hearing: This role requires constant communication with others in the organization to exchange information, review information, and make decisions about information. 
  • Seeing: This role requires the ability to view existing building structures inside and out to determine where scanning devices should be placed to get the required scans for the project. 
  • Carrying/Lifting: This role requires the ability to lift up to 20lbs to transport technological office equipment to and from various workspaces.
