Position Summary
The Mechanical Drafter is responsible for preparing detailed drawings to be used in various mechanical engineering projects. Use knowledge of building materials, engineering practices, and mathematics to complete drawings. This role will be exposed to various project types.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Typical functions of the Mechanical Drafter’s job include, but are not limited to:
- Produce drawings, using computer-assisted drafting systems (CAD and Revit).
- Draft plans and detailed drawings for systems, installations, and various project types working from sketches or notes.
- Determine the order of work and method of presentation, such as orthographic or isometric drawing.
- Draw ductwork, piping, diagrams, and isometrics to represent systems and their designed installations.
- May analyze various local, state, and federal codes/ordinances, by-laws, space and site requirements, and other technical documents and reports to determine their effect on designs.
- Finish drawings and documentation packages according to required mediums and specifications for the owner/architect’s dissemination.
- Draw rough and detailed scale plans based on preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets, and other data.
- Calculate HVAC loads, duct sizes, pipe sizes and sizes of system components based on project requirements and manufacturer’s product data that will be used for the project. Also determine the impact of the design on other technical aspects of the design.
- Review rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data to ensure that they conform to design concepts.
Qualifications and Experience
Required Education and Degree: Certification Program or Associate’s degree in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or similar program with experience in an Mechanical Engineering firm.
Required Background and Experience:
- Minimum 3 years in mechanical engineering
- Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals
- Excellent communicator, organizer, and engager
- Thrive in a fast-paced environment with changing demands and priorities
- Initiate and enjoy independent problem solving
- Successfully incorporate feedback and manage multiple points of view
- Demonstrate excellent language and written communication skills
Required Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
- Revit
- AutoCAD
Working Environment
When not working from a home office, remotely, or onsite at a project location, most of this role is performed in a professional office environment.
Additionally, this role is required to attend site visits. During site visits, there may be exposure to a variety of environmental conditions such as being outdoors, being in indoor non-temperature-controlled environments, and maneuvering into tight spaces to scan existing electrical power and lighting systems.
Physical Demands
- Sitting/Standing: This role is generally sedentary performing sitting work utilizing technological office equipment including a laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, scanners, copiers, and fax machines.
- Walking: This role requires the ability to move about inside the office to access technological equipment required for the role. During site visits, this role requires the ability to traverse various project sites and buildings that will have uneven surfaces.
- Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: This role may require stooping to reload printer trays with print paper. During site visits, this role requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl to set up scanning devices that will scan an existing structures heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and piping systems.
- Using Hands/Fingers: This role constantly operates technological office equipment such as laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, and scanners, copiers, and fax machines.
- Talking/Hearing: This role requires constant communication with others in the organization to exchange information, review information, and make decisions about information.
- Seeing: This role requires the ability to view existing building structures inside and out to determine where scanning devices should be placed to get the required scans for the project.
- Carrying/Lifting: This role requires the ability to lift up to 30lbs to transport technological office equipment to and from various workspaces.
