Boom Supersonic

Senior M&P Engineer - Metals

Making supersonic metallics at supersonic pace.

Boom is building jet engines and that means we’re working with high temperature superalloys all day every day - we have parts in fabrication, parts on the drawing board and everywhere in between.  This role presents a unique opportunity to apply your expertise and experience end-to-end, from powder/ingot to products making thrust - not just melt & cast, not just forging, not just allowables but true ownership and influence in material selection and fabrication.

We’re leaning into vertical integration, creating and improving processes and breaking the mold on tooling methods to make complex high-performance parts fast and learning through iteration.  Influence design, get parts made and see how they perform in the real world.  If you don’t want to wait years to complete a single iteration loop then this is the place for you.

Role Overview

  • Actively participate in turbo machinery design development trades and design reviews and make strong recommendations regarding material selection and fabrication decisions.
  • Author and release material and process specifications to support immediate raw material orders, part fabrication and associated testing.
  • Act as Boom’s SME and technical liaison with melt, cast and forge suppliers - answer  technical queries, ensure critical parts are processed correctly and engage as needed to support non-conformance investigations/dispositions.
  • Design and implement allowables test programs to enable generation of an internal material property database for a range of high performance alloys.
  • Propose, prioritize and advocate for the specific equipment and capabilities required in an internal mechanical testing lab and melt lab to support all M&P activities related to metallics at Boom.
  • Investigate and evaluate engine components for wear, damage and other indications that inform part performance and future material selection after active run-time in Boom’s on-site test cell.
  • Identify, cultivate and leverage relationships with research institutions focused on improving and developing the next generation of superalloys.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong material science fundamentals with education focused in the fields of Metallurgy, Materials Engineering and/or Materials Science.
  • Wide breadth of knowledge across a range of aerospace metals including nickel-based, stainless steels, aluminum, and titanium alloys.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and corrective actions including, but not limited to, fractography/metallography (SEM, EDS, XRF etc.), microscopy, hardness, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing.
  • Detailed understanding of material strength and damage resistance properties that are most relevant for engine components, including fatigue crack growth, low cycle fatigue, dwell creep etc.
  • Ability to interpret, organize and analyse materials testing datasets to enable engine component design.
  • Detailed knowledge of solution and aging heat treatment fundamentals and the relationship between heat treat optimization, grain structure and final part strength and ductility.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Deep technical knowledge of investment casting, including equiax, DS and SX casting technologies and processes as applied to airfoils - combined with a desire to explore alternate tool and fabrication methods.
  • Experience with ingot melting and centrifugal casting methods and specifications, in particular for nickel-based alloys.
  • Understanding of specialized forging techniques, including iso-thermal forging of high performance powered metal products and forging of high-purity titanium alloys.
  • Familiar with recent developments in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing and HIP/heat treat processing of Nickel-based superalloys for use in high temperature applications.

Compensation

The Base Salary Range for this position is $160,000 - $203,000 per year. Actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long-term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.

There is no set deadline to apply for this job opportunity. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the search is no longer active.

ITAR Requirement
