Senior Full-Stack Engineer

What we're looking for

We are seeking an exceptional problem solver who lives at the intersection of technical excellence and scalable solutions. You will use your deep technical knowledge and product sense to deliver high-quality, robust software solutions.

As a Senior Full-Stack Engineer, you will take ownership of key project areas, leading technical implementation and promoting engineering best practices. You will collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to successfully deliver and scale solutions.

The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of both back-end and front-end systems, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and a strong passion for developing outstanding, scalable products. This role requires the ability to deliver rapidly while upholding high standards and demonstrating strong ownership of all deliverables.

Responsibilities

Technical Excellence & Ownership
  • Create, own, and maintain high-quality, readable code that is appropriately flexible, reusable, and adaptable to changing requirements
  • Own the full lifecycle of software products from design to production, including bugfixes, load testing, penetration testing, and accessibility remediation
  • Tackle the hardest technical challenges in a project and provide early unlocks to the blind spots.
  • Debug complex issues across full technology stacks and code bases effectively while maintaining both speed and quality
  • Proactively identify and address technical debt and potential future challenges
  • Take full ownership of smaller project areas while maintaining high standards of code quality
  • Switch between optimizing for speed versus quality based on team requirements
Scalable Solutions & Impact
  • Translate product requirements and tickets into clear, efficient code solutions.
  • Create and share project and domain-specific knowledge that benefits other engineers.
  • Go deep into technical problems, advocate for solutions, get buy-in from stakeholders, and rally the engineers behind the solution.
  • Design and implement highly scalable, performant, and resilient full-stack systems.
Quality and Craftsmanship
  • Champions craftsmanship and maintains high standards.
  • Looks for ways to simplify code and infrastructure, prioritizing maintenance and migration costs.
  • Prioritize developer efficiency and prevent the reinvention of the wheel.
  • Create code that avoids common pitfalls and "code smells".
  • Actively participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback while remaining open to learning opportunities.
Project Execution & Communication
  • Work effectively on moderately defined project areas, incorporating review and guidance from senior technical leaders.
  • Develop deep self-sufficiency in at least one large area of the project while maintaining broad understanding across the system.
  • Communicate technical designs effectively through proofs of concept and documentation.
  • Clearly communicate assumptions and actively seek clarification when needed.
  • Consistently deliver high-quality work on schedule and follow through on commitments.
  • Think multiple steps ahead to anticipate and prevent potential problems.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements for a successful candidate:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of full-time work experience, or equivalent, as a:
    • Full-stack or back-end software developer
    • Data engineer
    • Engineering manager
    • Start-up founder
  • Advanced proficiency in English, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in at least one of the following programming languages: Typescript/Javascript, Python, Go, C#, or Rust.
  • Strong understanding of databases and data modelling.
  • Experience building and maintaining REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
  • Experience building front-end web apps using modern technologies & frameworks (e.g., React, Node).
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and containerization (e.g., Docker).
  • Familiarity with enterprise-grade CI/CD pipelines.
Your candidacy is enhanced by:
  • In-depth business knowledge of a particular area/sector (e.g. financial payments, insurance, healthcare, government, etc)
  • Knowledge of front-end performance optimization techniques and responsive design principles.
  • Knowledge of front-end design systems and component libraries.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform).
This role probably isn’t for you if:
  • You want cleanly defined tasks assigned for you by a manager.
  • You always want to “hop on a call” rather than read or write clear documentation.
  • You struggle to clearly communicate ideas with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You are a front-end or mobile developer with limited back-end experience.
