About the role
The Assistant Plant Manager is responsible for assisting the Plant Manager with operational and administrative oversight of an anaerobic digestion plant with wastewater treatment, utilizing Single Source Organics’ (SSO’s), food waste, to produce biomethane. The Assistant Plant Manager will oversee process performance and safety, operations personnel capability development, environmental permit compliance, and operational discipline for a team of eight (8) people. This position reports directly to the Plant Manager and reports on-site in Jessup, Maryland.
What you'll do
Operations
- Direct daily activities related to the safe, stable and efficient operation of the facility. Maintain plant operations in full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, and adhere to all company policies and procedures.
- Oversee the operation of the biological processes associate with Anerobic Digestion (AD) and the wastewater treatment facility – certified with a MD W5A license.
- Make recommendations for operational process changes verifying compliance associated with air, waste and stormwater permitting.
- Communicate with maintenance and engineering support functions ensuring safe, stable and efficient operation of the plant.
- Perform regular checks of plant equipment and determine the need to adjust, repair, and carry out basic service of equipment and machines.
- Ensure site tidiness and good housekeeping/5S throughout the facility with frequent audits.
- Maintain adequate inventory of consumables such as fuels, chemicals, and PPE.
- Maintain constant communication with plant leadership, pertinent information and operational updates.
- Respond to 24/7 365-day operational needs and alarms.
Management
- Direct and prioritize operational and maintenance resourcing based on facility prioritization.
- Monitor the efficient intake and record keeping of organic feedstock materials.
- Collaborate with Human Resource department to complete any new hire, performance management, talent development, schedule, payroll, PTO or employee relation matters.
- Manage and support a team of Wastewater Treatment (WWT) and Gas Upgrade Operators with technical input for all shifts.
- Support supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution.
- Assure the means are in place to develop team member’s knowledge, skills, progression, and productivity.
- Motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
- Promote a culture of collaboration and trust to maximize employee productivity, increase retention, and minimize turnover.
- Capitalize on mechanical downtime and collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance teams to implement and optimize operations.
- Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Ensure the ability to cross train operations staff on WWTP, Centrifuge and gas skid operations.
- Provide progressive disciplinary actions for violations of company Code of Conduct and MBC Site Expectations.
Administration
- Utilize our online Work Management Process (WMP) eMaint to generate and track work orders.
- Make routine purchases for operational and maintenance needs.
- Support and lead the development of site documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs).
- Monitor AD feeding records, gas production, digestate, wastewater and other reports/logs and communicate information to your team.
- Audit attendance, overtime (OT), check sheets and PTO usage for all staff members on your team.
- Understand basic financial acumen associated with manufacturing.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in the operation of AD and WWTP facilities essential to provide oversight and training of others.
- Knowledge and/or experience in the safe operation of rolling equipment such as forklifts, front end loaders, skid steers, cranes, and manlifts.
- Familiarity with instrumentation and controls, and SCADA systems.
- Knowledge of CHP, biomethane upgrading technology, flares, and gas blowers.
- Familiarity with pumps, compressors, agitators, de-packagers, conveyors, separators, etc.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations such as Confined Space, Hot Work Permits, Working at Height, First Aid, etc. is required. Successful completion of this occupational training shall be required
- Must facilitate good working relationships with superiors, peers, and direct reports.
- Maintain a residence within a commutable distance of the facility to respond to emergencies within 1 hour.
- Possess a Maryland Level W-5A Wastewater Certificate or be willing to obtain within 3 months.
- Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Competent with technology and the Microsoft Office Suite of programs.
- Experience leading a team with direct and indirect reports.
- Must possess a High School Diploma.
Physical Requirements
Mobility and Physical Strength:
· Must be able to climb ladders and stairs to access various areas of the facility.
· Must have the physical strength to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50lbs pounds.
· Capable of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing as necessary throughout the shift.
· Able to be standing for long periods of time at all hours of the day.
Environmental Conditions:
· Able to work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including exposure to high and low temperatures, humidity, rain, and wind.
· Capable of withstanding strong or unpleasant odors and common food allergens.
Work at Heights and Confined Spaces:
· May need to be harnessed to safely reach areas of the facility for maintenance or inspection, sometimes at heights or in confined spaces.
· Must be comfortable working at elevated heights or in confined spaces as part of routine duties.
· Must be able to fit in uncomfortable and tight spaces.
Sensory and Communication Requirements:
· Must have adequate vision, hearing, and dexterity to perform duties safely and effectively, with or without assistive devices or accommodations.
· Capable of communicating effectively in an industrial setting to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Additional Physical Requirements:
· Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary, which may include respiratory protection, gloves, hard hats, and protective clothing.
