About the role


BTS Bioenergy is seeking a reliable and committed General Laborer to support facility operations at our Maryland sites. Our facilities process and recycle organic waste through anaerobic digestion, requiring dependable team members to handle material flow, maintain site cleanliness, and support day-to-day operations.


This is an on-site role, with responsibilities that vary depending on the location. Some sites focus on warehouse and logistics operations (including forklift and baler use), while others emphasize general labor, sanitation, and facility support. All General Laborers are expected to contribute to safe, efficient, and well-organized facility operations.


This position reports to the local site management team. Responsibilities may vary by location.


What you'll do

  • Operate efficiently in a fast-paced environment to meet daily operational targets.
  • Handle inbound organic waste and palletized materials, including unloading, depalletizing, unpackaging, sorting, and proper disposal.
  • Operate forklifts and/or balers (where required) to manage pallets, recyclables, and waste streams.
  • Receive and inspect inbound materials, accurately completing load inspection paperwork and scale logs.
  • Maintain professional communication with drivers and team members to ensure seamless operations.
  • Perform general maintenance and site support tasks, such as sweeping, power-washing, sanitation, painting, trash/debris/snow removal, and minor repairs.
  • Promptly report safety concerns, discrepancies, or equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in compliance with company standards.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Attend all scheduled shifts punctually, communicating proactively about any necessary schedule changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors or managers to ensure smooth facility operations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Forklift and baler experience required at certain locations.
  • Previous experience in waste management, recycling, logistics, or industrial settings preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools.
  • Competency with technology (tablets, data entry, inspection logs).
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and conduct oneself professionally with drivers, customers, and team members.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Training provided in all areas for the right applicant.

Physical Requirements

  • Must have the physical strength to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Capable of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders/stairs, and reaching throughout shifts.
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, humidity, rain, and wind.
  • Comfortable working in environments with strong odors or exposure to common food allergens.
  • May be required to work at heights or in confined spaces with appropriate safety equipment.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and dexterity to safely perform duties with or without assistive devices.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, which may include respiratory protection, gloves, hard hats, and protective clothing.
