About Carbonova:
Carbonova is a pioneering manufacturing startup leading the charge in sustainability, specializing in carbon capture technology to produce advanced carbon nanofibers. Our commitment to environmental responsibility, innovation, and excellence positions us at the forefront of the green manufacturing revolution. Through a novel chemical catalytic process, Carbonova is converting greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane) into solid carbon products for everyday applications ranging from construction materials and plastics to electronics. We are at the forefront of the green manufacturing revolution and seeking proactive and driven individuals committed to environmental responsibility, innovation, and excellence to join us!
As a start-up technology company Carbonova is at the forefront of developing a solution to produce high-volume superior carbon nanofibers for use in massive market applications. We offer an opportunity to make a tangible impact in the climate tech industry while working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. At Carbonova, you’ll collaborate with a passionate team and contribute to innovative technology development that drives sustainability in advanced materials. While the role is primarily on-site in Calgary, you’ll enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule, allowing up to two days per week of remote work, depending on project demands. Join us as we transform ideas into scalable solutions for a sustainable future.
As a Lead Process Chemical Engineer at Carbonova, your day-to-day focus will revolve around spearheading the development of our commercial demonstration unit (CDU) as part of our cutting-edge nanofiber reactor technology. You’ll lead the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) process, collaborate with EPC firms, and critically evaluate design documentation, such as process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and cost estimates. A typical day might include developing detailed mass and energy balances, performing techno-economic modeling, and preparing project updates for executive leadership. You will also analyze experimental results from pilot and bench facilities, ensuring alignment with project goals and contributing to life-cycle assessments (LCA) and risk management studies.
To thrive in this role, you should bring at least eight years of experience as a process chemical engineer, with strong expertise in hands-on troubleshooting and optimizing chemical processes involving reactions and kinetics. Your technical foundation should include mastery of mass and energy balances, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and reaction engineering. Familiarity with process simulation software like AspenHYSYS or Matlab is a plus. Beyond technical skills, you’ll need strong collaboration, communication, and time-management abilities to juggle competing priorities and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines. Additionally, a strong sense of urgency and an ability to be flexible within changing start-up conditions based on business needs will be essential to the incumbent for this role.
