As a faith-based organization, we provide, directly and in collaboration with others, accessible quality healthcare for low-income individuals and families residing in Los Angeles County.

QueensCare is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization originally founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Sacred Heart, whose mission of compassion and accessible healthcare continues today. QueensCare provides screening, treatment, education, and preventive and direct care to Los Angeles area residents in need. Beyond that, we also give charitable grants to other non-profits making a difference in the City of Angels and fund scholarships for those entering medical fields with an interest in working in underserved communities.


About the role


Under the direct supervision of the Mobile Programs Manager, the Optical Assistant will assist the Optometrist in providing excellent patient care and support within a mobile unit. Optical Assistant will assist in delivering comprehensive eye care services to patients at various locations, ensuring accessibility to quality care for the underserved populations. This role requires a combination of technical expertise in optometry assistance and excellent patient care skills. Responsibilities include assisting with scheduling schools for eye exams, frame selection, submitting orders lens fitting, distribution of eyeglasses, and maintaining accurate patient records.


What you'll do

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for eye exams by documenting medical histories and performing preliminary tests (e.g. visual acuity).
  • Conducts basic diagnostic tests such as autorefraction, tonometry, visual field testing at various locations. 
  • Processes orders for eyeglasses.
  • Measures and dispenses spectacles, troubleshoots eyeglass problems, and provides follow-up services such as adjustments and repairs.
  • Contacts various schools and partnered sites to arrange schedules, check on order status with laboratory, and respond to any inquiries from parents, patients, and school.
  • Schedules appointments and manage patient records.
  • Completes patient’s charts in the electronic health record system, Revolution, following standard optometric practice guidelines and specific program requirements.
  • Maintains and calibrates optical equipment and tools.
  • Provides guidance on proper eyewear selection and usage to ensure optimal effectiveness and safety.
  • Educates patients on carious eye health issues and preventative measures.
  • Handles and manage inventory of eyewear and tools.
  • Assists in setting up and dismantling mobile clinic equipment.
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization of mobile unit.
  • Operates and maintains the mobile clinic vehicle, ensuring it is stocked and ready for community services.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Participates in outreach activities and community events to promote eye health awareness.
  • Collaborates with other programs and community organizations to provide links to services and enhance service delivery.
  • Travels daily or frequently to various partner sites within Los Angeles County to support program needs and coordination.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to contribute to overall team functionality and organizational success.

  • Attends training and educational sessions as required
  • Must be willing and able to work all business hours including evenings and weekends to attend health fairs/events as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to work at all locations as needed.

Qualifications


Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of Optician Program or equivalent work experience in related field preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years of experience in optometry or a related field, preferably in a clinical or mobile healthcare setting.
  • Experience working with adults, children, and families from diverse social, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Valid California driver’s license with current automobile insurance.
  • Experience working with faith communities and demonstrates spiritual maturity.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of optical terminology, equipment, and procedures to ensure effective operation and high-quality patient care in a mobile environment.
  • Promotion of process improvement.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications such as Zoom, Teams, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook, EHR, preferably Revolution.
  • Works well with children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail to manage administrative tasks efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact compassionately with patients of diverse backgrounds.
  • Understands which decisions can be made alone and which decisions need to involve others.
  • Demonstrates a self-directed mature, disciplined, and tactful approach to fulfilling job duties.
  • Demonstrates ability and flexibility to work in other areas of the organization as needed.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both oral and written, preferably bilingual (Spanish- oral).
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification and provide standard first aid care.

The pay range for this role is:

25.76 - 33.74 USD per hour (QueensCare Corporate Headquarters)
