Mid-Hudson Energy Transition, Inc. (MHET) is a not-for-profit community-based organization that empowers municipalities, their residents, and businesses to own and share renewable energy, create healthier buildings, and join in community wealth-building to strengthen the resilience of the Hudson Valley in the face of climate change. We engage and build on the active involvement of communities, with particular emphasis on low-income and communities of color that are being harmed first and worst by climate change.





Bilingual Community Coordinator - Climate Justice Fellow


Summary: Reporting to the Outreach Manager, the Bilingual Community Coordinator will serve as an important link between MHET’s programs and the communities they serve. This individual will conduct outreach in Kingston, NY, and nearby cities like Poughkeepsie and Newburgh to build and strengthen relationships with individual residents, small businesses, local organizations, and community partners. The Bilingual Community Coordinator will be a key partner with the Spanish-speaking Latino community, focusing on communicating the details and benefits of MHET’s programs through a variety of tactics, both in-person and otherwise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build genuine and empathetic relationships with community members.
  • Understand MHET’s programs: Home Upgrade Grants, Kingston Community Energy, Mid-Hudson Community Solar, the Home Energy Loan Program, and the HELP Fund.
  • Conduct outreach, in-person, digitally, and through print materials, to educate community members on MHET’s programs, including goals, details, and benefits.
  • Provide Spanish interpretation during community meetings, information sessions, and tabling events. 
  • Translate program materials, brochures, flyers, and website content into Spanish. 
  • Ensure translated materials and communications are accessible to community members regardless of their familiarity with New York’s energy ecosystem. 
  • Assist in the planning and execution of outreach events; evaluate the effectiveness of outreach events and assist in improving processes. 
  • Provide follow-up support to community members on program questions and sign-ups, including coordinating with external agencies, contractors, community partners, and others.
  • Document outreach activities, language support successes and failures, and community feedback. 
  • Build an understanding of climate justice and energy democracy, which are core values of our organization and inform the way that we approach the work that we do. 
  • Engage in problem-solving and take initiative to support community members through their energy-related issues.
  • Contribute to creating a stronger community through direct support and teamwork.


Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish and English is required.
  • Ability to conduct local outreach in Kingston, NY. 
  • Enthusiasm for community engagement and outreach.
  • A strong passion for helping others and making a difference.
  • A desire to learn about energy systems. (In-depth prior knowledge is not needed.) 
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to equity and inclusion, with a focus on building the capacity of communities to lead their energy transitions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Prior experience in community organizing, marketing, or related fields is a plus.


Eligibility

Any individual who currently resides in New York and can work in New York full-time for 12 months AND has any one of these characteristics: 

  • is a single parent,
  • is a veteran, 
  • has a disability, 
  • household income is at or below 60% of the State Median Income
  • is eligible for or receives assistance through HEAP, TANF, SNAP, or other human service benefit programs,
  • is an incumbent or unemployed fossil fuel worker, 
  • was previously incarcerated, 
  • is homeless, or
  • is 18-24 years old who is enrolled in or has completed a work preparedness program such as those offered by BOCES, technical high schools, Conservation Corps, YouthBuild, and Americorps. The training program must include clean energy education with hands-on technical training. 


Location, Schedule, and Availability:

Mid-Hudson Energy Transition is located in Kingston, NY. The daily work schedule is Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. The work can be performed on-site and hybrid. 


Compensation and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $60,000. Benefits include health insurance, a retirement plan with a 4% employer match, professional development opportunities, and two weeks of paid time off.
