Job Summary
Location: Washington, DC or Remote (U.S.)
The Staff Accountant will collaborate with external accounting resources and will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day accounting operations, including but not limited to, general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, and reconciliations. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Job Description
Accounting
Prepare and post journal entries, maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
Perform account reconciliations, including bank statements, and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
Process accounts payable and receivable transactions, ensure accurate coding, and timely payment of invoices.
Assist in the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring all deadlines are met.
Review and process employee expense reports for accuracy and compliance with company policies.
Identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes and systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Financial Reporting
Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
Assist in the preparation of high-level and detailed financial reporting, analysis, and modeling for presentation to Funders, COO, CEO and Board of Directors.
Conduct ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as required by management.
Compliance
Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and internal policies.
Provide support during internal and external audits, including preparing necessary documentation and responding to audit inquiries.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA or working towards CPA designation is a plus
Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
Proficiency in Excel and experience with accounting software (e.g. Sage Intacct, Quikbooks)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
