About Your New Role:

Are you a veteran PHP developer who loves unraveling the mysteries of legacy code as well as improving and modernizing the technology stack? Do you take pride in stabilizing, optimizing, and breathing new life into mature systems? We're seeking a skilled Backend PHP Developer to join our team of highly skilled engineers in continuing to improve our existing mission critical codebase.

In this role, you’ll dive deep into legacy PHP, uncover root causes of long-standing bugs, and deliver high-impact, reliable fixes. If you value pragmatism over flash, stability over trends, and structure over chaos, this is your kind of challenge.

This is a 100% remote, full-time position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, debug, and maintain a large legacy PHP codebase.
  • Troubleshoot and squash bugs, performance issues, and edge-case scenarios in procedural and object-oriented PHP code.
  • Refactor code for improved stability, readability, and maintainability without disrupting existing functionality.
  • Collaborate with other developers to understand legacy logic and document discovered workflows and behaviors.
  • Conduct in-depth code reviews with a focus on system reliability and data integrity.
  • Optimize database queries and ensure consistent performance in a relational database environment.
  • Investigate and resolve security vulnerabilities in code structures and server configurations.
  • Design pragmatic testing strategies to protect fragile code from regression during updates.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • 5+ years of experience working extensively with core PHP, particularly in maintaining and troubleshooting older systems.
  • Deep understanding of procedural and object-oriented programming in PHP, with an ability to quickly interpret unfamiliar legacy code.
  • Experience debugging and optimizing MySQL queries in a monolithic architecture.
  • Solid grasp of Linux server environments (Ubuntu/Apache) and traditional LAMP stack configurations.
  • Familiarity with version control using Git and an ability to track changes across legacy systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in reverse-engineering undocumented or complex application behavior.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, autonomous environment with minimal reliance on frameworks or boilerplate tooling.
