About your new role:


As a Systems/Database Administrator, you will be responsible for the administration, monitoring, and optimization of various systems including MariaDB clusters deployed on Azure virtual machines. Working with MaxScale load balancers, you’ll ensure high availability and seamless SQL traffic distribution between regions. You will support business-critical, geo-redundant databases that form the backbone of CommandLink’s ITSM platform.


No travel to customer locations is required.


Key Responsibilities:


Database Platform Operations

  • Administer MariaDB databases running on Azure VMs across various regions.
  • Deploy, configure, and manage MaxScale load balancers for SQL traffic and failover.
  • Maintain database replication, clustering, and peering services between data centers.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Software to automate and scale the MariaDB environment.
  • Other database types in addition to MariaDB including Timeseries databases and traditional MySQL.

Performance & Security

  • Monitor and tune database performance (indexes, queries, configuration parameters).
  • Manage secure access, roles, and data encryption for compliance and best practices.
  • Oversee geo-based and performance-based DNS routing for database endpoints using Azure Traffic Manager.
  • Develop, test, and maintain database backup and disaster recovery procedures.

Automation & Monitoring

  • Build and operate monitoring tools for database health, replication, and MaxScale status.
  • Automate routine maintenance, patching, and alerting processes.

Incident Response & Support

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production database issues (failover, replication, connectivity, performance).
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for critical incidents and escalations.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Create and maintain documentation for database architecture, operational procedures, and disaster recovery plans.
  • Collaborate with application, network, and security teams on cross-functional projects.

General Systems Administration

  • Ubuntu server administration on Azure Virtual Machines
  • Monitoring system health, documentation, and investigations
  • Azure monitoring, administration, and optimization

What you'll need for success:

  • 3+ years of experience as a MariaDB/MySQL DBA (cloud or hybrid preferred).
  • Strong hands-on experience with MariaDB clustering, replication, and MaxScale.
  • Experience deploying and operating databases on Azure (or similar cloud platforms).
  • Familiarity with Azure Load Balancers, peering, and Traffic Manager for DNS-based routing.
  • Solid understanding of performance tuning, backup strategies, and disaster recovery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing multi-region/multi-datacenter database architectures.
  • Familiarity with automation and configuration management tools (Ansible, Terraform, scripting).
  • Experience with security compliance in regulated environments (e.g., SOX, HIPAA).
  • Knowledge of CloudFlare, geo-DNS, and large-scale, high-availability systems.

Commandlink hires individuals in a number of geographic regions and the pay ranges listed reflect the cost of labor across these regions. The base pay for this position as displayed at the bottom of the job description is a range based on our lowest geographic region, up to our highest geographic region. Pay is based on location among other factors, such as skill-set, experience, and qualifications held.
