POST Background Investigator | Statewide

OVERVIEW

Cooke & Associates, Inc. (CAI) conducts POST-compliant background investigations for public safety agencies throughout California. These investigations support hiring decisions for law enforcement, fire service, and other public safety positions and must meet applicable POST standards and consumer reporting requirements.

CAI is seeking experienced Background Investigators to conduct thorough, accurate, and compliant background investigations involving interviews, verification activities, and detailed written reporting. This role is suited for investigators with prior POST background experience who are able to work independently on a project-based, part-time basis.

POSITION DETAILS

Location:                    

Remote, with required in-person fieldwork within California. Candidates must reside in California. No relocation assistance is available.

Schedule:                   

Daytime business hours only, based on assignment needs.

Employment Type:     

Part-Time Employee (W-2), Project-Based Assignments.

Compensation:                       

Paid on a per-project basis, dependent on background type and scope.

Travel and Expenses: 

Local travel within California required. Reasonable, job-related expenses reimbursed if incurred.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Background Investigator is responsible for conducting POST-compliant background investigations in accordance with CAI procedures, POST guidelines, and applicable federal and state consumer reporting laws. The role involves both remote investigative work and in-person interviews, as well as verification of records and preparation of detailed investigative reports.

Investigators are expected to complete assigned background investigations within established timeframes while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, confidentiality, and compliance with all applicable standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct background investigations for public safety positions in compliance with California POST requirements.
  • Interview applicants, references, employers, neighbors, and associates as required.
  • Verify education, employment history, military service, and other background elements.
  • Collect, review, and analyze investigative documentation and records.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations and discrepancy interviews when issues or inconsistencies are identified.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and well-supported written investigative reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state consumer reporting, privacy, and POST standards.
  • Complete background investigations within allotted timeframes established by CAI and client agencies.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED

  • POST Background Investigation Certificate REQUIRED at time of application. Must have successfully completed a POST-Certified Background Investigations Course (minimum 32 hours).
  • Prior experience conducting POST-compliant background investigations for law enforcement or fire service agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct professional interviews using tact and discretion.
  • Strong written communication skills, including narrative investigative reporting.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to successfully complete CAI pre-employment background screening requirements.

PREFERRED

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Prior law enforcement or public safety investigative experience.
  • Intermediate or advanced POST-related coursework or certifications.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
TECHNOLOGY AND REPORTING EXPECTATIONS
  • Ability to use a computer and standard office software for investigative reporting and communication.
  • Ability to accurately complete electronic reports and required documentation.
  • Reliable internet access and a secure work environment suitable for handling sensitive and confidential information.
