About the role

The Program Manager will work to plan and implement a wide range of strategic initiatives using strengths and resources available across multiple teams at COS. In order to achieve these goals, the PM will be required to assess the capabilities of individuals and teams, identify areas where additional resources are needed, and support both the planning, oversight, and implementation of such efforts.


What you'll do

  • Lead day-to-day management of large-scale research projects, with responsibility to grow into oversight of the broader research program area, ensuring deliverables are on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Translate research projects into repeatable services and processes, ensuring learnings are applied consistently across the program portfolio and leveraged by other teams to advance shared organizational goals.
  • Oversee and mentor Project Coordinators and foster a collaborative, high-performing project team.
  • Manage project plans, track risks, and ensure clear documentation, communication, and reporting.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for internal collaborators and external partners.
  • Align project activities with COS’s mission, strategic plan, and funder requirements.
  • Provide leadership that balances flexibility, accountability, and support for diverse work styles.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position will supervise (Senior) Project Coordinators

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated success in program or project management.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to balance day-to-day execution with long-term program goals.
  • Experience designing and implementing project management frameworks and workflows (e.g., milestones, roles/RACI, stage gates, reporting) to support consistent, repeatable delivery across teams.
  • Experience coordinating across multiple stakeholders and disciplines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, adapt to change, and build structure where needed.
  • Commitment to transparency, rigor, and reproducibility in research.
  • Experience facilitating cross-team learning and turning project outcomes into actionable improvements and shared resources, ensuring successful practices are visible across projects and connected to COS’s broader goals and impact.

Required Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or higher preferred.
  • 10 years of project management experience, or 2+ years of program management overseeing multiple personnel or projects.
  • At least 3–5 years of progressive staff management experience required.
  • PMP or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Ability to understand research contexts and collaborate effectively with scientific staff. Candidates should be comfortable ‘speaking the language’ of research (e.g., hypotheses, study protocols, replication, statistical reporting) to build trust and alignment with scientific teams.
  • Commitment to open science principles; prior open science experience is a plus but not required.
  • Background in academia or nonprofit program management is a plus.

Salary

  • The salary range for this position is $77,727 – $90,000 annually

Benefits

  • 401(k) with employer match. COS offers a matching contribution of 100% up to 3% of pay and another 50% up to 5% of pay (the full match will be 4% if participants elect to defer 5%).
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance. COS covers 100% of employee premium and 50% of all dependent coverage costs under the base plan.
  • 20 days of paid time off in year one.
  • COS offers paid leave for up to three (3) months to all full-time, regular employees to care for their child after birth, after or during the adoption process, or to care for their spouse, child, or parent who has a serious health condition as well as for the employee’s own serious health condition.
  • Remote work with a Macbook and Google Workspace environment.

Additional Information

  • This is a fully remote position, with the expectation to attend two multi-day, in-person retreats each year, plus occasional additional travel for project or partner meetings as needed (to be discussed in advance).
  • COS supports flexibility in work scheduling. Most teams operate 9am–5pm Eastern Time, with core hours of 11am–4pm ET for collaboration. Adjustments for other U.S. time zones are possible.
  • COS currently operates in: Virginia, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, California, New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, West Virginia, Oregon, Connecticut, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, Washington DC, Delaware, and Tennessee.
