Job Summary:
Coterie is seeking a highly experienced Controller with deep public company expertise in insurance agency accounting and operations. This role will be responsible for overseeing Coterie’s financial infrastructure, reporting, and operational controls. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of the distinct nuances of MGA / agency-side financial practices, distinct from carrier or insurance-side accounting. You will lead financial reporting, commission accounting, internal controls, and systems optimization to support a high-growth, tech-enabled insurance distribution business.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all financial operations related to accounting, including revenue recognition, producer commissions, accounts payable/receivable, and month-end close
- Own the financial audit process at a level of sophistication befitting a Big 4 PCAOB audit
- Ensure accurate and timely GAAP-compliant financial reporting
- Partner with Growth Enablement and Technology teams to align financial processes with operational realities of insurance distribution
- Manage and improve commission tracking, reconciliation, and payments, ensuring clarity for agents and partners
- Lead and execute budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with executive leadership
- Maintain and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures tailored to agency operations
- Own and enhance accounting systems and processes, including integration with CRM, policy admin, and other operational tools
- Oversee external audits, tax filings, and compliance activities as they pertain to agency activity
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to support growth initiatives, vendor agreements, and financial planning
- Hire, manage, and develop a growing finance team, including staff accountants or analysts
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5+ years in insurance agency, brokerage, or MGA operations
- Experience leading or playing a key support role in PCAOB audits
- Strong command of agency-specific accounting practices, including commission structures, trust accounting, and revenue cycles
- CPA designation strongly preferred
- Proven leadership experience managing financial teams and scaling operations in growth-stage environments
- Hands-on experience with accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online, NetSuite) and operational tools common to the agency space
- Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and audit-readiness
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and process rigor
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally across teams
- Prior experience in insurtech, SaaS-enabled distribution, or multi-entity environments a strong plus
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with producer commission tools, CRMs (e.g., Salesforce), and policy admin systems
- Experience working with venture-backed startups or organizations in rapid growth phases
- Exposure to data analytics tools or dashboards (e.g., Looker, Tableau) for financial reporting
Our interview process:
Our hiring process generally consists of 4 phases. The goal is to provide an opportunity for us to learn more about our candidates while allowing them to get to know us as well!
- Phase 1: Qualified candidates will first meet with a member of our People Operations team for a phone interview. This discussion is a high-level conversation to understand more about your background and interests and for us to share more about Coterie and the position.
- Phase 2: Selected candidates will be invited to meet with our Hiring Manager for a 2nd interview via Teams video. This interview is designed to be more detail oriented and allows you to learn more about the role and expected to be 30 minutes in length.
- Phase 3: Top candidates will be invited to participate in an experiential exercise interview. This will include a project provided in advance along with a 1-hour interview conducted with our hiring manager.
- Phase 4: Final candidates will receive an invite to our final interview series. This series will include 1:1 interviews with additional team members. The final series is roughly 1-2 hours in total.

- Annual salary estimated between $180,000 - $220,000 with additional equity compensation. Candidates who meet all the minimum requirements and possess additional relevant experience, as outlined in the job description, may be considered for a salary above the midpoint of the above range. Salary is based on internal equity; internal salary ranges; market data/ranges; applicant’s skills; prior relevant experience; degrees or certifications, etc.
