About the role

The Electrical Engineer, PE is responsible for the engineering design, technical oversight, and professional approval of electrical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. This role serves as the Engineer of Record (EOR) and assumes professional and legal responsibility for electrical designs, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and industry best practices. The Electrical Engineer, PE provides final technical authority, mentors engineering staff, and collaborates with project teams and external stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, and constructible electrical systems.

What you'll do

Engineering Design & Technical Authority

  • Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) for assigned projects.
  • Develop and approve electrical power distribution, lighting, grounding and bonding, and low-voltage system designs.
  • Prepare, review, approve, and seal/stamp electrical drawings, calculations, and specifications as required.
  • Perform and review engineering analyses including load calculations, short-circuit studies, coordination studies, arc-flash analyses, and voltage drop calculations.
  • Establish design criteria, engineering standards, and technical guidelines for projects.

Project Support & Collaboration

  • Partner with project managers, estimators, construction teams, and clients throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field conditions.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and value engineering initiatives.
  • Support commissioning, system startup, and closeout activities as required.

Compliance, Safety & Risk Management

  • Assume professional responsibility for compliance with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, local building codes, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate technical and safety risks throughout design and construction phases.
  • Coordinate directly with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), utility providers, and inspectors.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and documentation in accordance with company and regulatory standards.

Technical Oversight & Mentorship

  • Provide technical supervision and direction to Electrical Design Engineers and Designers.
  • Review work prepared by others for accuracy, code compliance, and constructability prior to approval.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineering staff.
  • Promote consistent engineering practices and continuous improvement across projects.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a technical representative of the company in meetings with clients, owners, architects, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide technical input to support proposals, estimates, and business development efforts.

Continuous Improvement & Professional Practice

  • Maintain active PE licensure and required continuing education.
  • Stay current with evolving electrical codes, standards, and emerging technologies.
  • Recommend innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions that enhance safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Uphold professional and ethical engineering standards at all times.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan and Texas (or ability to obtain upon employment) with ability to obtain additional state licensure as required.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive electrical engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as Engineer of Record on commercial or industrial projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and applicable local codes.
  • Proficiency in engineering and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in Bluebeam and Accubid
  • Experience in industrial, manufacturing, healthcare, or mission-critical environments.
  • Experience in design-build or contractor-led engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems, controls, or energy management systems.
  • Additional professional certifications (e.g., NCEES, LEED).
  • Ability to perform equipment life cycle, cost budgeting and estimating.
