Daily Journal

Intermediate Software Developer

The Daily Journal is California's largest legal affairs news provider. We are dedicated to providing timely and insightful coverage of legal developments throughout the state. With a commitment to accuracy, integrity, and accessibility, we strive to keep legal professionals and the public informed about the latest appellate and trial court outcomes.

Daily Journal Corporation is looking for a curious, driven Software Developer who thrives on solving problems, digging into complex systems, and modernizing legacy applications. If you love cracking puzzles, understanding how old code works, and reimagining it with today’s tools and practices, this is the role for you.

Ideal candidates love the challenge of figuring things out, not just coding new features. They’re natural problem-solvers who want to leave systems better than they found them.

This role begins full-time in office for onboarding and knowledge transfer. After that, it transitions to a hybrid schedule (2–3 days/week onsite).

What You’ll Do

  • Modernize and rewrite legacy applications to improve compatibility, reliability, and maintainability
  • Design, develop, and maintain applications using C#, .NET Core, and .NET
  • Write efficient SQL queries, design schemas, and optimize stored procedures
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on new features for web platforms and newspaper publishing systems
  • Conduct and participate in code reviews to maintain quality and best practices

Core Skills We’re Looking For

  • Expertise in C#, .NET Core and .NET
  • Strong SQL skills: schema design, normalization, stored procedures
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code
  • Experience working with and modernizing legacy systems

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with Python and JavaScript
  • Familiarity with AJAX, CSS, HTML
  • Experience in ColdFusion
  • Exposure to Word Macros and VB

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to tackle complex problems and deliver practical solutions
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills—able to work across technical and non-technical teams
  • Detail-oriented with a “puzzle-solver” mindset

The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed in this job function. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties; additional responsibilities may be assigned.

At this time, we are only able to consider candidates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents due to employment authorization requirements. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship or work authorization support for this position.

Why Daily Journal?

  • Competitive paid time off as well as paid holiday time
