The Head of Property Management Accounting will oversee the financial operations related to property management, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance for a diverse institutional portfolio. This role requires a strategic leader with expertise in property accounting who can ensure accurate and timely reporting, lead process improvements, and support senior management with financial insights to drive business performance.


What Will You Do:

  • Financial Oversight and Reporting  
    • Oversee all accounting functions related to property management, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Provide leadership in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, ensuring alignment with company goals and client expectations.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements, conducting regular audits and reviews of financial statements.
  • Process Improvement and Efficiency  
    • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and productivity within property management accounting.
    • Leverage automation and technology to streamline reporting, month-end close processes, and data management.
    • Collaborate with Shared Services and other internal teams to ensure smooth integration of accounting processes across departments.
  • Leadership and Team Development  
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration.
    • Set and manage performance goals for the team, ensuring high-quality output and alignment with business objectives.
    • Encourage a proactive approach to solving issues and implementing solutions, empowering the team to contribute to business goals.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration  
    • Act as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders, including senior management, property managers, and department heads, to ensure alignment on financial objectives.
    • Work closely with the other senior leaders to provide insights and recommendations on financial strategies, risks, and opportunities within the property management portfolio.
    • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors and other compliance-related engagements.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making  
    • Utilize data to develop insights that improve portfolio performance and enhance operational efficiency.
    • Drive the implementation of metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and measure the success of accounting processes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • 10+ years of experience in accounting
    • 5+ years in property management or real estate
    • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least 5 years in a senior or managerial role within property management, real estate, or a closely related industry. 
  • Educational Background: 
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; 
  • Technical Proficiency
    • GAAP and Property Accounting Standards: Minimum of 8-10 years of experience applying GAAP principles in a real estate or property management setting.
    • Industry-Specific Regulations: At least 5 years working with property management or real estate regulations, such as fair housing laws, tax laws affecting property income, and compliance standards.
  • Software Skills:
    • Accounting Software (Yardi, MRI, Appfolio, or similar): 5+ years of hands-on experience with property management-specific accounting software. This includes experience in customizing reports, managing multiple entities, and utilizing software features to streamline month-end close processes.
    • Advanced Excel Skills: Proven track record of using advanced Excel functions (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros, data analysis tools) for 5+ years to support data analysis, financial modeling, and complex reporting.
    • Automation Tools: Familiarity with tools that automate repetitive tasks in accounting (e.g., Alteryx, RPA tools) with at least 2 years of experience implementing or working with such tools.
  • Process Improvement and Efficiency:
    • 5+ years leading process improvement initiatives, ideally within an accounting function.
  • Analytical Mindset and Strategic Decision-Making:
    • 5+ years of experience in data analysis and financial strategy, with the ability to interpret complex data, create KPIs, and make informed recommendations to senior leadership.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA or MBA

The pay range for this role is:

200,000 - 250,000 USD per year (Remote - United States)
