About Abby Health

Abby Health is Australia’s busiest online clinic, built for the future of primary care.

Founded in 2023, Abby was established to address one of the most urgent issues in Australian healthcare: access. With one in three Australians now without a regular GP, we're reimagining how people access everyday care—without losing what makes care personal: long-term relationships and detailed patient histories.

We connect patients to licensed GPs and nurse practitioners through same-day, 100% online care—delivering high-quality treatment for everyday issues, from headaches to herpes, coughs to cramps, and everything in between. Behind the scenes, we use structured patient histories, smart intake tools, and streamlined workflows to make every consult feel more like self-care.

Our approach is guided by three core values:
🔹 Smart – Intelligent systems that surface what matters, when it matters
🔹 Beautiful – A thoughtful, intuitive experience for patients and clinicians alike
🔹 Caring – Human support, continuity of care, and relationships that last

We believe the future of primary care is affordable, same-day, and online first.
A system where most care is delivered remotely—supported by pre-diagnosis tools, wearables, alerts, and proactive follow-up. In-person visits become the exception, not the default. It’s a smarter, safer, more efficient model—one that finally puts patients first.

And it’s already happening.

Since launching, Abby has become one of the most trusted names in digital healthcare in Australia. We’re used by hundreds of thousands of Australians, with a 4.7/5 average rating on Google and Trustpilot.

We’re quality-first and purpose-driven. Whether you’re a patient looking for better answers or a clinician looking for a better way to practise—Abby is here to make care better, for everyone.

Smart. Beautiful. Caring. That’s the future we’re building—for Australian primary care, and the people who rely on it.

About the role

Our Lead Software Engineer will own the technical architecture across the whole platform: the patient app, the clinician portal, our internal tooling, the iOS app, the Android app and the API behind all of them. Working directly with our CTO - a technical co-founder who's still hands-on in the code - to take on more of the platform's technical direction as we grow. This is a hands-on technically focused lead role - you'll spend most of your time building, and the rest making the technical and product calls that shape what gets built.

Beyond day-to-day product work, you'll lead our most ambitious projects - including bringing more of our core clinical infrastructure in-house. Much of what we're planning doesn't exist yet. You'll design it, then build it.

What you'll do

  • Own technical architecture and direction across the stack - for new projects and day-to-day product work alike
  • Lead major projects end-to-end, from architecture through to shipped product
  • Take genuinely ambiguous requirements and turn them into product decisions and shipped software - user flows included, not just code
  • Keep production reliable - healthcare runs on trust, and you'll treat monitoring, debugging and incident response as part of the job, not a chore
  • Mentor the engineers around you and raise the bar for how the team builds

How we build & our tech stack

React + TypeScript on the front end (patient app and clinician portal), Node.js + Express + PostgreSQL on the back end, AWS infrastructure, and a Swift iOS app. Around that: Datadog, Auth0, Stripe, and integrations across the Australian healthcare ecosystem.

  • AI-native. AI tools (Claude Code, primarily) write most of our code. Your leverage is architecture, product judgment and review - you design the system, direct the AI, and own the outcome. If you're already building this way, you'll feel at home; if the idea doesn't excite you, this isn't the right role.
  • Patients first. The tech comes second to the patient experience. We optimise to the level that makes sense for the problem, not for its own sake.
  • In person. We're a small team that moves fastest in the same room. This role is Sydney-based and in the office regularly.

What we're looking for

  • Startup experience - this one's a must. You've shipped at an early-stage company, and you're comfortable when requirements are ambiguous and priorities change under you.
  • A genuinely hands-on lead. You've owned production systems end-to-end and you still build every day.
  • Confident across the full stack. Frontend, backend, database, infrastructure - you don't need a specialist for any of it.
  • Product judgment. You can make the call a product manager would make elsewhere, and it holds up.
  • A reliability mindset. You notice when things break, you fix them properly, and you care that patients never feel it.
  • Sydney-based and keen to work alongside the team in person.

What we offer

  • $180k–$200k base, depending on experience
  • ESOP (allocated from 6 months)
  • Genuine impact and ownership at a growing healthtech startup, working directly with the founders
  • Greenfield projects you’ll drive end to end, from architecture to launch
