Founding Software Engineer

About Alder Property Management

Alder is an AI-native property management company. We manage properties directly and are rebuilding the systems behind leasing, maintenance, and accounting so we can give owners and residents better service at a much lower operating cost.

Property management is a fragmented $140B market and AI now makes it possible to rebuild how the industry operates. Our investors include early backers of OpenAI, ElevenLabs, and Cognition. Spencer Rascoff, Zillow's co-founder and former CEO, is also an investor and close advisor.

About the Role

You'll be one of Alder's first engineers, building the operating system that runs our property management company. At its center is the property brain: a context layer that understands each property, owner, resident, lease, payment, and maintenance history. It gives both our team and our AI systems the information they need to carry work across leasing, maintenance, and accounting.

We're open to engineers at any career stage, and we weigh how quickly you learn and how you take ownership more than years of experience. You'll work closely with the founders and our property management team, help shape our engineering practices and team, and take on broader responsibility over time.

What you'll do

  • Build the data model and workflows behind Alder's property management operating system.
  • Develop AI systems that can use property context to carry out work, recognize when information is missing, and bring in a person when needed.
  • Make practical engineering decisions in areas where correctness matters, including payments, financial records, and communications with owners and residents.
  • Ship to real users, learn from where the system falls short, and improve it.

What we're looking for

  • Good judgment. You look past the initial request to understand the problem, decide what's worth building, and explain your tradeoffs.
  • Ownership. You follow through after launch and take responsibility when something isn't working.
  • Curiosity about unfamiliar domains and a willingness to learn how the business operates.
  • The ability to build working software and learn new tools. We use TypeScript, Python, and Postgres, but experience with those specific technologies isn't required.

Experience with AI systems, payments, accounting, or property management is a plus, not a requirement.

Compensation & Benefits

We pay above market, and every founding engineer receives meaningful early-stage equity. The final offer depends on experience and level.

Benefits include:

  • Health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k)
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Flexible PTO
