Job Title: Senior Healthcare Analyst

Reports to (title): Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer


Job Description:

Alger is seeking an experienced Senior Healthcare Investment Analyst to support fundamental research across the healthcare sector for the firm’s long/short equity strategies. This role is designed for a seasoned generalist analyst with broad healthcare exposure who can contribute independently while continuing to grow within Alger’s collaborative, research-driven investment platform.


The Senior Healthcare Analyst will play a key role in idea generation, fundamental research, and portfolio monitoring across a wide range of healthcare subsectors. The ideal candidate brings a strong long/short mindset, is comfortable covering multiple healthcare industries, and can add value quickly with limited training while developing toward a more senior role over time.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Fundamental Research & Investment Analysis

  • Conduct in-depth fundamental research across healthcare subsectors, including pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, medical devices, life science tools, and diagnostics, with some exposure to biotechnology
  • Analyze financial statements, business models, competitive positioning, and industry dynamics to develop differentiated long and short investment theses
  • Build, maintain, and update detailed financial and valuation models to support investment decisions
  • Perform primary research, including meetings with company management teams, sell-side analysts, industry experts, and other relevant contacts
  • Prepare clear, concise internal research notes and investment memoranda

Portfolio & Idea Generation Support

  • Generate actionable long and short investment ideas aligned with Alger’s investment philosophy and risk framework
  • Support portfolio construction and ongoing monitoring through coverage of existing holdings, earnings analysis, and thesis updates
  • Track healthcare sector themes, regulatory developments, and industry trends, and communicate insights to the investment team
  • Identify key risks, catalysts, and inflection points across covered companies

Team Collaboration & Development

  • Work collaboratively with portfolio managers and other investment professionals in a team-oriented, idea-driven environment
  • Demonstrate increasing ownership of coverage responsibilities over time, with the opportunity to expand depth, breadth, and impact
  • Contribute to a culture of intellectual rigor, accountability, and continuous improvement

 

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree required in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, science, or a related field
  • MBA and/or CFA designation preferred but not required
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above required in a 4.0 scale
  • 5–7+ years of buyside investment experience, with a strong emphasis on fundamental equity research
  • Minimum 5–6 years of experience in a long/short equity investing environment, with demonstrated accountability for idea generation and coverage
  • Broad healthcare generalist coverage experience required, with comfort covering non‑biotechnology subsectors including pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, medical devices, and life science tools
  • Some familiarity with biotechnology highly preferred, including an understanding of key concepts, development pipelines, and regulatory considerations, though a dedicated biotech background is not required
  • Familiarity with biotechnology concepts, pipelines, and regulatory frameworks strongly preferred
  • Proven experience developing and maintaining differentiated long and short investment theses

 

Skills:

  • Strong fundamental research capabilities, including financial statement analysis, valuation, and modeling
  • Strong fundamental research and analytical skills, including financial modeling, valuation, and industry analysis
  • Ability to operate as a healthcare generalist, covering multiple subsectors and business models effectively
  • Comfort evaluating a wide range of healthcare companies, including regulatory, reimbursement, and scientific considerations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate investment ideas
  • High level of self-motivation, intellectual curiosity, and disciplined work ethic
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple coverage responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative mindset with confidence to express independent views and challenge assumptions constructively

 

Salary Expectations: $250,000-$300,000 base salary plus discretionary bonus per performance
