Amber Electric (External)

Senior Legal Counsel

âšĄïž About Amber

Amber is an entirely new way to buy and sell power, designed for a world powered by renewable energy. We give customers direct access to the real-time wholesale electricity price as it varies every 5 mins and the technology to shift more of their energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid. It’s a cheaper way to buy power, a smarter way to sell power, and the fastest way for Australia to reach 100% renewable energy.

We are a clear category leader in Australia for home battery automation (over 50% market share) and growing rapidly (close to 100k customers). We have also expanded into licensing our core technology to utilities overseas, including a partnership with E.ON Next in the UK.

Amber is backed by top Australian and international investors including 1GT, Square Peg, Main Sequence, Innovation Victoria, Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack, ETF Partners, and E.ON Next.

We are scaling rapidly and you’d be joining a team of over 240 committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and purpose-driven culture as we transform a major industry.

Our products are reshaping home energy: Amber for Batteries cuts bills by exporting stored energy at wholesale prices of up to $19/kWh, and Amber for EVs enables the cheapest, cleanest charging. In 2027, we will push this even further with our new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

đŸ’» About the Role

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract (full-time or part-time), with the possibility of extension depending on business needs. Ideally based in Melbourne, but open to candidates anywhere in Australia.

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will be a key operational legal partner across Product, Operations, Marketing, and Business Development. Reporting directly to the Head of Legal, you will operate with autonomy, owning legal portfolios spanning global SaaS licensing, Data Privacy and IP.  You will focus on practical, end-to-end commercial execution, drafting and negotiating complex agreements, supporting tech rollout, and navigating day-to-day energy regulatory compliance as we scale.

Your focus for the next 12 months will be:

  • Global Expansion: Lead the commercial contracting workstreams, hard-wiring our legal and commercial frameworks as we license Amber’s core technology across the UK, EU, and beyond
  • New Product & V2G Launch: Provide practical legal support for upcoming product initiatives, including Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) rollout.
  • Key Partnerships & Regulatory: Provide risk-weighted legal advice that helps teams achieve their business goals while moving ahead safely.

đŸ‘‰đŸœ Responsibilities

  • Commercial Contracting: Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including SaaS/tech licensing, partnerships, and key vendor contracts.
  • License & International Scaffolding: Own, implement, and support business areas on IP protection frameworks, data and privacy management, licensing, and cross-border entity management.
  • Business Legal Advice: Review new market entry proposals, product features, digital user journeys, and marketing campaigns to ensure practical compliance with Australian Consumer Law (ACL), privacy regulations, and data security standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Operations: Work alongside our Regulatory team to interpret National Energy Market (NEM) rules, operationalise compliance requirements, and resolve customer/market disputes.
  • External Counsel Briefing: Strategically instruct and manage external legal panel members when specialist advice is required, ensuring high-value output and cost control.

🎯 Key Requirements

  • Experience: 8+ years PQE with extensive, hands-on in-house or commercial law experience, with a strong emphasis on contract drafting, technology/SaaS, M&A, or regulated commercial work.
  • In-House commercial pragmatism: Proven track record of operating effectively in a fast-paced environment delivering clear, risk-weighted legal advice that helps teams achieve their business goals.
  • Regulatory capacity: Prior exposure to energy sector regulation (eg NECF) is an advantage, but a strong ability to pick up and apply complex regulatory frameworks quickly is key.
  • Autonomous execution: Able to take ownership of commercial matters end-to-end, manage multiple priorities, and work directly with business stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Clear Communication: Ability to cut through legal jargon and deliver direct, plain-English advice to non-legal colleagues.

⭐ What we believe a great team looks like

  • We put the customer at the centre of everything we do. Whatever it is we are doing, it’s always with a viewpoint that this will help our customer.
  • We are willing to take calculated risks on bold ideas. We seek to do things differently and are willing to try creative ideas if we believe there is significant upside with a culture where we recognise that not all ideas will succeed.
  • Hypothesis driven approach. We develop hypotheses of actions we can take to improve the business and then set up the systems to quickly test if that hypothesis was correct.
  • We seek insight. We seek to disaggregate the data to draw out the insight to inform our next hypothesis.
  • We prioritise the biggest opportunities. We test a variety of ideas but quickly cut what isn’t working and double down on what is.
  • We continually learn and improve. We keep track of what we have learnt so that we continually improve and never make the same mistake twice.
  • We create leverage. We believe that the key to creating an efficient business at scale is to create leverage in everything we do. Whether that’s implementing a better process or developing a new technology to solve a problem faster.
  • We have fun. We love coming to work, and interacting with our colleagues and customers. If we spot an opportunity for a joke, or to do something nice for someone, then we take it.

💰 Salary range is circa $195,000 base per annum (depending on candidate experience and pro-rata for part-time) and is quoted excluding superannuation (12%).

We have an office in the Melbourne CBD, where we work flexibly between the office and home. For those based in Sydney, catch up in a co-working space in the city every now and then, and rest of the locations in Australia work from home. We expect to remain Melbourne based but maintain flexibility between the office and WFH.

🌈 If this kind of work gets you excited, we'd love to hear from you!

Even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements listed above, we still encourage you to apply. We're open to all backgrounds and encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply. We never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.
