Capitol Engineering Co.

Welder/Fitter - Pipe, Tank, Structural

Capitol Engineering is an established and expanding custom fabrication company delivering high quality engineered & fabricated steel products to a wide variety of industries including mining, agriculture, and general industrial applications. Capitol Engineering was established in 1937 and we are currently growing at a rapid pace and are looking to add multiple welders & fitters to our team.

This position requires an experienced and detail-focused individual that wants to be part of a growing team. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and a proactive approach to problem solving.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

We're hiring welders and fitters across three specialties: structural, pipe, and tank. You don't need to do all three - come to us with strength in one and we'll put you to work. Cross-trade skill is a plus, not a requirement.

Meet the minimum for AT LEAST ONE of the following tracks:

Structural

- Welders: qualified, or able to qualify, to AWS D1.1 (structural steel) and AWS D1.8 (seismic supplement)

- Fitters: AWS D1.1 qualification; layout and fit-up of structural members to shop drawings and AISC tolerances; tack welding

- 3-5+ years of structural steel fabrication experience

Pipe

- 6G GTAW (TIG) on pipe, open root, uphill progression, OR a 6G GTAW root with an FCAW-G (dual shield) fill and cap

- 3-5+ years of pipe welding experience

Tank

- All-position FCAW on carbon steel plate (flat, horizontal, vertical-up, overhead)

- 3-5+ years of welding experience in tank, plate or heavy fabrication

All tracks

- Ability to read and weld to a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)

- Ability to pass Capitol's hands-on weld test (or weld/fit test for fitters) for placement

- Willingness to take the 6G qualification test within your first 90 days. All welders are welcome to test, and passing it earns a bonus installment (see below)

A plus

- Versatility across project types - our Welder/Fitter roles work across structural, tanks, pipe, ducting and crushers, and cross-trade skill grows fast here

- SMAW/GMAW, air-arc gouging and back-gouging, rolled shells, stainless, API 650-type tank work

- ASME Section IX qualifications, ASME B31.3 process piping, stainless and alloy pipe with purge, RT-quality work history

- FCAW-G/FCAW-S and SMAW in all positions, CJP groove welds with backing and back-gouging, experience with UT-inspected work

The basics (all tracks)

- Read blueprints, shop drawings, piping isometrics and AWS weld symbols

- Comfortable with grinders, torches, a tape and a square, and fitting your own work

- Your own hood and basic hand tools; required PPE worn at all times

- A safety-first mindset: hot work, fall protection, confined space, rigging awareness, lockout/tagout

- Reliable attendance, reliable transportation, and a team-first attitude

- Valid government-issued ID and legal authorization to work in the U.S.

- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Successful candidates are placed into our standard Welder 1-3 or Fabricator 1-3 positions based on test results and experience.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

- $1,500 sign-on bonus: $500 on your first pay run, $500 after 90 days, and $500 when you pass our 6G test (Structural & Tank Tracks) or 2” Super Coupon (Pipe Tracks). Test must be completed within your first 90 days.

- Competitive wages based on your tested level

- Quarterly bonuses

- Flexible time off for all employees

- Medical, dental and vision

- 401(k) with company match

- Growth opportunities in a rapidly growing company, including advancement through the Welder/Fitter series by testing
