About The Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS)
The Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS) is a Vancouver-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, economic, and cultural wellbeing of people of African descent through the delivery of inclusive housing, built spaces, and culturally informed programming. Hogan’s Alley Society has been a leading advocate for the Black community in Metro Vancouver, addressing the legacies of urban renewal, residential displacement, and erasure from Vancouver’s historical narrative. Our vision is to own and operate the built environment on the historic site of the nucleus of the Black community in Vancouver, recreating a hub for the Black community through the development of the Hogan’s Alley Block, rooted in the Hogan’s Alley Society Community Land Trust.
In September 2022, HAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Vancouver to enter into a long-term lease for the 898 Main Street block (Hogan’s Alley Block) upon the removal of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts. This development will include a Black cultural center, affordable housing, small business spaces, and childcare facilities, addressing historical harm caused by past displacement policies. This initiative is one of the few Black-led Community Land Trusts in Canada, ensuring long-term affordability and preventing further displacement of Black communities.

Project Description
The Equitable Land Reform: Addressing Collective Ownership for Marginalized Black and Racialized Communities project investigates the systemic barriers in Canadian property law that disproportionately disadvantage Black and racialized communities by prioritizing individual ownership models over collective ones. Through multi-year research, community engagement, and legal reform advocacy, the project aims to create the foundation for more equitable land ownership systems rooted in racial justice.
The work will unfold across three provinces—British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Ontario—where historic and ongoing displacement has undermined Black communities’ access to land and wealth. In partnership with Black-led community land trusts (CLTs), academic researchers, and allied organizations, the project will:
The project’s ultimate goal is to challenge the exclusionary property law system, create opportunities for wealth redistribution and community self-determination, and foster a national network of Black-led CLTs. By centering anti-racism, decolonization, and community accountability, this initiative seeks to transform how land is owned and stewarded in Canada, ensuring Black communities have permanent, affordable, and community-controlled access to housing and land.
Scope of Role

The Coordinator will play a key role in building awareness and participation in the Hogan’s Alley Society Community Land Trust, supporting community engagement activities, coordinating project operations, and helping strengthen collective ownership practices within Black communities.
The ideal candidate is collaborative, relationship-oriented, and committed to racial justice, housing equity, and community self-determination. They are comfortable managing multiple priorities while working across community, academic, nonprofit, and institutional spaces.
