About OurCalling

At OurCalling, our work is rooted in the Gospel and powered by innovation. We are a Christ-centered ministry where every job is a ministry position.

We serve individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis through our Street Outreach and Navigation Center, walking with them on a journey from the streets toward hope, stability, and transformation. We meet each person with grace, accountability, and personalized care. We believe that healing happens through trust, relationship, and the hope of Jesus. Powered by innovation, we go beyond meeting immediate needs to create real solutions that help end homelessness one life at a time. Our commitment is to restoration, not relocation, as we help our neighbors discover a sense of belonging, purpose, and a healthy community. Our aim is to help our neighbors walk with Jesus and take the next steps toward living in healthy community.

Our culture is welcoming, intentional, hopeful, and adaptable. We innovate with courage, serve with humility, and hold firm to the belief that every guest, volunteer, donor, staff member, and partner who walks through our doors is made in the image of God. Our staff is diverse, comprising individuals from various backgrounds and experiences. Grounded in the Gospel, we are committed to loving our neighbors with compassion, accountability, and a dedication to lasting change.

Job Summary: We primarily serve the chronically, unsheltered homeless population. Our homeless friends (Guests) are survivors who have experienced vast amounts of trauma. We use resources, services, and relationships to create opportunities for gospel centered conversations. We are careful in our interactions to demonstrate to our Guests and volunteers how to live out the truths of the gospel and let the love of Christ control our actions. This position, while ministry focused, is not like traditional church ministry, but deals with the “rawness” of life on the streets while serving a combination role of chaplain, advocate and case worker.

Job Responsibilities:

  • As part of the Care Ministry team, engage in relational ministry with our Guests, building one-on-one relationships, which is critical to our work
  • Both initiate and consciously turn conversations to focus on Christ
  • Serve Guests through crisis intervention and/or emotional de-escalation
  • Prioritize prayer for and/or with our Guests
  • Willingness to assist Guests with some hygiene issues when needed
  • Participate in and lead life-skills classes, Biblically-aligned addiction recovery classes, Bible studies and devotionals
  • Work with Placement Solutions and utilize motivational skills to help our Guests consider and make decisions to get off the streets
  • Use active listening, coming into conversations as a humble learner, taking the time to listen carefully to our Guests rather than simply suggesting solutions to problems
  • Advise and advocate for homeless Guests who are navigating social services in Dallas, developing relationships while walking together through the process
  • Drive our homeless Guests to placement appointments, such as intake for a recovery program, emergency shelter, detox centers, etc.
  • Track and record relationship-building through Neighbor Solutions
  • Update placement retention status of Guests
  • Actively manage personal self-care to remain fresh and strong as a minister and case manager to our Guests
  • Be prepared to work shifts at our winter Inclement Weather Shelter (a 24-hour emergency shelter operation where we provide relational care for our guests and manage the day-to-day logistics and food service)

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED, required
  • Three years of related “life” or ministry experience, required
  • Experience in pastoral care toward those struggling with addiction, mental illness, abandonment, homelessness and poverty, desired
  • Fluency in conversational Spanish, preferred

Skills & Abilities:

Because many of our Guests have been addicts for years or experience various levels of mental illness and trauma, Care Ministers should:

  • Be patient and longsuffering while showing discernment
  • Show grace to those who feel defeated by their own desires and cycles of destruction or are unable to articulate more than their frustration
  • Interact gently and with empathy, as needed
  • Have the ability to occasionally be light-hearted during difficult situations, or able to laugh in the midst of hard, real-life situations
  • Be able to establish and manage boundaries, deny requests regularly, and overlook or navigate through entitlement attitudes, demonstrating self-control while not being easily offended
  • Be sensitive to cultural differences such as race, ethnicity, and neighborhoods of origin
  • Be knowledgeable of the Bible and comfortable teaching, witnessing, discipling and encouraging
  • Have a demonstrable track record of maturity, integrity, taking personal initiative, being flexible in a busy and fast-paced environment, and being a trusted team member, working effectively across the ministry
  • Be able to lift boxes, drive a van, use an iPad to track case notes, and be willing to help Guests with human hygiene challenges
  • Have a strong, personal self-care program, being able to set and manage healthy boundaries
  • Have experience in or knowledge of trauma-informed care
  • Have the ability to discern, deal with or manage situations that may feel uncomfortable with our Guests including relapse, human frailty, hygiene problems, mental and emotional trauma, hostility, deceit, manipulation, or other spiritual challenges
  • Be humble with the ability to listen well and accept constructive feedback from the team manager and co-workers

Care Minister’s motivation to serve must be:

  • A commitment to build deep relationships
  • A love for Jesus Christ and a desire to see His kingdom and glory increase
  • A love for those in the homeless community, and desire for them to be won to a fruitful relationship with Jesus Christ, and to escape homelessness

Additional Qualifications

  • Upholding a close and growing relationship as a disciple of Jesus Christ
