SUMMARY: 

The IPB Technician will assist with laboratory and greenhouse studies related to the development of microbial biopesticides to control a wide variety of insect pest species. The Technician will prepare materials for bioassays, rear and maintain insect colonies, support plant and greenhouse care, and maintain clean, organized work areas. The IPB Technician will also support other laboratory and greenhouse activities as required.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Maintain a multitude of insect colonies and healthy plants in laboratory, growth room and greenhouse.   
  • Collect eggs and larvae from a variety of insect species to ensure synchronization of established colonies.  
  • Prepare a weekly supply of insect larvae to support the bioassay needs and culture maintenance.
  • Prepare materials needed for bioassays and assist in setting up various bioassays (in vitro and in planta) to evaluate insecticidal candidates.
  • Maintain the laboratory and greenhouse by cleaning glassware, growing containers, benches, floors, and work areas as needed.
  • Plant, transplant, water, fertilize, prune, and monitor greenhouse crops to ensure healthy plant growth for research activities.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain irrigation systems, including emitters, tubing, timers, and related equipment.
  • Monitor and maintain greenhouse climate-control conditions, including temperature, humidity, lighting, ventilation, and environmental set points.
  • Release and monitor beneficial insects in accordance with study protocols and integrated pest management practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

A successful candidate is a quick learner who is innovative, creative, detail oriented, and team focused, with:

  • Hands-on laboratory, greenhouse, plant-care, or irrigation experience.
  • A professional and positive attitude. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


In addition, the Technician should have:

  • Good time-management and organizational skills, with the ability to multitask.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs., with assistance or independently.
