Position Overview

The Special Events & Maintenance Specialist is responsible for special events operations and building facility maintenance support for The Tech Interactive. The primary emphasis is on delivering facility services professionally, competently, on time, and courteously while ensuring the safety and security of guests, fellow staff, contractors, and volunteers. This non-exempt (hourly) role reports to the Special Events department.


Responsibilities

Special Events:

  • Prep and stage inventory items according to event profile specifications and floor plans.
  • Collaborate with the Special Events team to meet client needs and requests in real time.
  • Set up and strike equipment such as staging, pipe and drape before the museum opening the following day.
  • Return equipment to appropriate storage areas.
  • Attend weekly Special Events Meeting as applicable.
  • Report maintenance issues through proper documented channels
  • Complete additional related tasks or duties as assigned by Operational & Special Event Management.


Facilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and maintain building systems including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, carpentry, mechanical infrastructure, and usage of the related Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Integrate mechanical, electrical, AV, and interactive components into fabricated assemblies and exhibit systems when required.
  • Support the installation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of interactive exhibits and equipment, and exhibit infrastructure.
  • Perform loading dock and warehouse functions and responsibilities, including forklift operation, loading and unloading of equipment, supplies, deliveries, and event items
  • Maintain safe, organized shop and work environments, and ensure proper use and maintenance of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Collaborate with facilities staff, exhibit developers, designers, and operations teams to implement creative technical solutions for facility and exhibit infrastructure and visitor experiences.
  • Track facilities supply inventories.
  • Complete additional related tasks or duties as assigned by Operational & Special Event Management.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable codes relevant to duties, including, but not limited to, Title 24, Cal/OSHA, NFPA 72, NFPA 70, EPA, ADA, and all local regulating agencies. 


Requirements and Skills 

  • High school diploma or equivalent education and experience required.
  • 1 year of experience in facilities maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC, and minor construction.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • General knowledge of tools, hardware, and building materials pertaining to maintenance and upkeep.
  • Training in the operation of scissor lift and forklift operation desired.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a favorable driving record.


Working Conditions and Schedule

  • This role works primarily on-site Tuesday-Saturday and will include evenings but you will be given at a minimum 2 weeks' advance notice.
  • Must be available for a flexible schedule, including evenings, as required by projects and maintenance schedules.
  • Role will be split between the Special Events and Facilities Department depending on operational needs and will fluctuate seasonally.
  • Ability to safely carry out daily duties, including lifting to 75 lbs, bending, climbing, reaching, pushing, and pulling of furniture and equipment. 
  • High noise levels that require hearing protection. 
  • Working around lubricants, solvents, batteries, cleaning fluids, and paints. 
  • Basic facility maintenance troubleshooting.
