Reporter, Tech Capital Markets

About The Information

The Information is the go-to source of in-depth reporting for the most influential leaders in technology and business. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco, our original, high-quality journalism has the power to inform the most consequential decisions shaping our future, and we’ve built a community of 700,000 active readers who depend on us to do just that. We have a financially healthy business, plenty of capital, and big ambitions to grow our team and business.

About the role

The Information is looking for a proven reporter to expand our finance team and deepen our coverage of the intersection of technology and dealmaking. Technology companies have never needed more capital, and Wall Street has never been more eager to provide it.

As artificial intelligence, data centers, chips and infrastructure reshape the technology industry, companies are raising money in increasingly complex ways across debt markets, joint ventures and other structures. At the same time, Wall Street banks are reorganizing their technology franchises and launching new groups and financial products.

This is a scoop-driven beat, but not a quick-hit deals role built around incremental mandates and who hired which bank. The opportunity is to get inside how transactions are structured and sold, why tech companies need to do them, how investors are responding and how Wall Street is reshaping itself around the tech industry’s capital demands. This is a chance to contribute to differentiated coverage for the most discerning audience in tech and business journalism, building on our finance team’s compelling reporting on AI infrastructure, deals and regulation.

What you'll do

  • Drive the agenda with scoops, smart analysis and deeply reported features.
  • Break news on how technology companies are raising money outside of venture capital,  including public market debt, equity and joint ventures.
  • Cover how major banks are reorganizing around tech and AI clients, including new groups, product launches and internal strategy shifts.
  • Explain complex transactions in clear language, including what the structure means, who benefits and why it matters.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom on stories involving AI infrastructure, IPOs, private markets, public-company finance and Wall Street strategy.
  • Appear regularly on TITV, The Information’s daily live video show.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of business, finance or technology reporting experience.
  • A track record of scoop-driven journalism and source-building on a competitive beat.
  • Strong understanding of capital markets, investment banking, corporate finance or technology deals.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complicated financial structures clearly and accurately.
  • Comfort reading offering documents, earnings materials, credit agreements and other deal-related documents.
  • Ability to build sources across Wall Street and the technology industry, including bankers, investors, lawyers and executives.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to identify why a specific deal or product matters beyond the immediate transaction.
  • The ability to work out of The Information's San Francisco or New York office.

What Success Looks Like

You’ll publish within your first month. By six months, you’ll be driving conversation on the beat  and consistently breaking stories that bankers, investors, tech executives and competitors are reading closely. Over time, your stories will become a must-read for understanding how Wall Street is financing the technology industry and how the industry is shaping Wall Street.
