Position Overview:

We are seeking a Division Controller to support our operations teams in Huntington Beach, CA. This in-office role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment and enjoys partnering closely with operations to drive financial performance and improve business processes.


The Division Controller plays a critical role in maintaining accurate job cost reporting, supporting monthly close activities, managing receivables, and partnering closely with project managers and operations leadership. In addition to core accounting responsibilities, this role will help identify opportunities for process improvement, strengthen financial controls, and support operational decision-making as the business continues to grow.


This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys working directly with the business, improving processes, and helping teams scale effectively in a fast-growing company. The ideal candidate is comfortable rolling up their sleeves while also thinking strategically about how to improve systems, reporting, and workflows.


The Division Controller will also serve as a strategic financial leader within the division, helping guide financial decision-making, improve operational processes, and support the continued growth of the business.


Familiarity with the California construction industry and public works projects is required.


Key Responsibilities


Job Cost and Financial Reporting

-Review job cost reports with Project Managers to ensure accuracy and proper cost coding by job and phase

-Maintain detailed knowledge of assigned jobs including gross profit, margin trends, over/under billings, and pending change orders

-Partner with operations teams to proactively identify cost issues and improve financial visibility across projects

-Support leadership with financial insights that help improve project performance and operational decision-making

-Help refine reporting processes to improve clarity, accuracy, and timeliness of project financial data


Receivables and Cash Flow Management

-Monitor accounts receivable aging and identify at-risk accounts

-Partner with Project Managers to improve billing accuracy and collection timelines

-Coordinate with subcontractors and clients to resolve billing and payment issues

-Document collection efforts and escalate cash flow risks when necessary


Accounting Operations and Close

-Enter invoices, accruals, and journal entries accurately and on time

-Support monthly close activities to ensure deadlines are met and financial results are accurate

-Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and strengthen financial processes as the business scales

-Process petty cash checks for apprentices and coordinate posting with accounting

-Pay state and union training funds


Compliance and Public Works Support

-Support accounting and reporting requirements for California public works projects

-Handle OCIP and UCIP workers compensation reporting

-Ensure compliance documentation is complete prior to payment processing

-Email subcontractors based on invoices and request outstanding compliance documentation required for payment release


Process Improvement and Operational Support

-Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting, and internal controls

-Help implement improvements that increase efficiency and support the needs of a growing organization

-Act as a resource to operations teams to ensure financial processes support project execution and profitability


What We’re Looking For:


5+ years of hands-on accounting experience in construction

Strong knowledge of job cost accounting, journal entries, and monthly close

NetSuite experience required

Proficiency with Excel and ERP systems

Detail-oriented and accountable

Ability to work cross-functionally with operations teams in a fast-paced environment

Comfortable balancing hands-on execution with process improvement and operational support
