The Excavation Support person is a laborer who performs a variety of manual tasks outdoors in all weather conditions; including digging, laying conduit, helping with machinery, etc. This is all done while working in a safe and effective manner.


Deeply Digital's outside plant focuses primarily on placing underground and aerial fiber for telecommunications. Its services include line, coaxial, and optical fiber cable placement, splicing, and home installation.

Job Description:

A successful Fiber Optic Splicer candidate must have knowledge of established fiber optic procedures and techniques. They must be familiar with a wide range of tools and equipment and possess the ability to read and understand prints/maps, safety rules, and operating instructions. Services may include performing inside wiring, cabling, knowledge of OTDR, various test equipment, and testing and maintenance services.

The Splicer position is a skilled position he/she will have the experience and knowledge to perform all the duties of a Fiber Splicer. This position will need to be flexible in their hours, with occasional on-call duties including night and weekend work. The Splicer will frequently communicate with the customer and act in a professional manner.

Responsibilities:

All phases of fiber optic construction include but are not limited to: Loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal and placement of various types, sizes and weight of construction materials and equipment.

  • Install and repair fiber optics.
  • perform in fiber optic splicing
  • Safely operate a bucket truck.
  • Setting up safety perimeter using signage, cones, safety barriers
  • Flagging traffic when required
  • Flexibility to work in multiple locations
  • Prepare splice locations, termination points, and installation of splice closures
  • Clean, maintain, stock, and secure assigned vehicle and equipment daily
  • Splice loose tube fiber
  • Operate splicing equipment
  • Identify issues with fiber using red light
  • Construct proper splice cases
  • Place a mid-sheath splice
  • Fill out audit sheets per location (per splice)
  • Test and troubleshoot fiber using an OTDR
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations\
  • Pull fiber when needed
  • Ability to work at night /various hours.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible and willing to obtain the required license for the position.
  • A good driving record is required.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to operate various types of trucks and bucket trucks.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to hand tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, etc.
  • Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb telephone poles and work in a bucket truck and work aloft and climb poles up to 40 feet.
  • Able to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed with or without assistance.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic color code and numbers associated.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include nights and weekends.
  • Understanding of terminology used in fiber splicing.
  • Experience splicing fiber including all necessary steps.
  • 2-3 years’ experience splicing fiber.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous fiber experience, preferably in the telecommunication industry.
  • Able to perform all duties in fiber optic construction.

Pay is based on the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the employee.

Working Conditions:

This is a full-time hourly position, based on a 40 hours per week. This position operates in various different environment, including cold, rain, sleet, snow, high and low temperatures, and high wind. The outside work environment will vary throughout the day, including changes in terrain, traffic, urban settings, and/or rural settings. This position may occasionally be exposed to natural gas and to the risk of electrical shock. Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels.

Physical Requirements:

The employee will need to have the ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 12 hours at a time), tolerate work in extreme weather conditions, withstand prolonged and repeated: lifting, standing, climbing, kneeling, reaching, and feeling, crouching, and crawling. The employee will need to be able to regularly lift 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Pay: $20.00 - $34.00 per hour
