Job Overview 

Democracy Docket is seeking a Marketing Operations & CRM Strategist to be the technical backbone of our newsletter program, the core foundation to our subscription-driven business. By building back-end systems to support the lifecycle of 400,000 subscribers — including 60,000 paid members — this role is essential for our direct-to-consumer subscription strategy. 


The Marketing Operations & CRM Strategist  will leverage our tech stack — primarily HubSpot — to optimize growth and retention functions, streamline full-funnel strategies and analyze data to drive performance. This is a hands-on, technical role responsible for managing the backend systems that power our subscriber growth engine.


The ideal candidate is comfortable working with CRMs, building multi-step workflows and automations, implementing advanced audience segmentation and developing reports and dashboards to track analytics and inform strategy.


As part of the Subscription & Product Team, this role will collaborate closely with the Newsletter and Growth Specialist and the Audience Growth Team. This is an exciting opportunity to combine technical and operational expertise with strategic and analytical thinking, directly influencing the growth and success of our fast-growing subscription-based newsroom.


This role reports into the Senior Growth Manager.



Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the backend design, development, and management of automated lifecycle journeys, including welcome series, engagement campaigns, renewal reminders and post-renewal communications
  • Manage subscriber database and infrastructure in our CRM to ensure clean and accurate data for campaigns and workflows
  • Design and build custom workflows to support business initiatives in close collaboration with the Subscription & Product Team
  • Monitor and maintain email health, including deliverability, engagement metrics, and list hygiene
  • Build reports and dashboards to track KPIs and provide insights to inform retention and engagement strategies
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and optimize backend systems for reliability and performance
  • Collaborate across teams to translate business goals into scalable automated solutions


Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience with CRM and ESP platforms ideally in a subscription-based news or media company
  • Experience using HubSpot strongly preferred
  • Advanced technical expertise building automated journeys and workflows, forms and pipelines
  • High comfort mapping and organizing data properties and owning audience segmentation and logic
  • Proactive, detail-oriented problem solver with strong organizational skills and willingness to adapt to new features and platforms
  • Proficient in analyzing qualitative and quantitative data and synthesizing findings 
  • Experience designing and building comprehensive audience surveys to inform future strategies
  • Strong understanding of email deliverability and list maintenance best practices
  • Ability to learn audience quickly and lead customer communications with empathy and care
  • Passion for politics, news and/or voting rights and democracy


Work Environment
This is a full-time role based out of our Jersey City office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary Range: $110,000-$115,000
