Job Overview 

Democracy Docket is seeking a dynamic and strategic Social Media Manager to lead our growing social media and video teams. This role is a unique opportunity to shape high-level strategy while driving day-to-day execution, audience growth, and engagement across multiple platforms.


You will oversee content that translates critical legal and political developments into timely, compelling, and digestible social media posts and videos. You’ll play a pivotal role in expanding our reach, deepening engagement with our community, and ensuring that our social presence reflects the urgency and impact of the news events we cover.



Key Responsibilities

  • Lead social strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive, multi-platform social media strategy that supports organizational goals and builds a strong, engaged community.
  • Manage social and video teams: Supervise two social media specialists and a video team. Oversee daily content production, review all social copy and video and ensure alignment with our editorial tone and mission.
  • Content oversight: Ensure that all content is timely, reader-friendly, and accurately conveys complex legal and political news related to voting, redistricting and democracy.
  • Editorial coordination: Work closely with the News Division to align social content with editorial priorities and messaging.
  • Data-driven decision making: Use analytics to guide strategy. Track performance, compile reports, and lead brainstorms to improve future content and engagement.
  • Cross-team collaboration: Coordinate with the Growth Team on campaigns to grow newsletter subscribers and memberships. Support the promotion of events, merchandise, and more.
  • Visual brand consistency: Collaborate with the Graphic Designer to ensure cohesive visual identity and assets across all platforms.
  • Innovation: Stay ahead of emerging trends, test new platforms (like Reddit and others), and expand Democracy Docket’s digital presence.
  • Team development: Manage and develop junior team members, fostering a collaborative, creative, and performance-driven environment.

Required Skills

  • Strategic thinking: Proven ability to develop and implement high-level social media strategies that align with organizational goals and drive audience growth.
  • Team leadership: Experience managing direct reports and can inspire, support, and challenge your team to meet objectives.
  • Content development: Deep understanding of how to distill complex legal and political issues into accessible, engaging content.
  • Media/platform expertise: In-depth knowledge of social media platforms (including Bluesky, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube) and trends within the evolving media/news landscape.
  • Data analysis: Comfortable using analytics tools to track performance, derive insights, and optimize content strategy based on audience engagement and platform metrics. HubSpot experience is a plus! 
  • Fast-paced environment: Thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, enjoy keeping up with the news, and are always ready to test new ideas and platforms.
  • Mission-aligned: You’re passionate about democracy, voting rights and the courts —  and committed to informing the public about why these issues matter.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in a full-time social media role, ideally in a newsroom, media outlet, or other mission-aligned role
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and cross-functional collaboration
  • Strong understanding of political and legal news topics
  • Proficiency with analytics tools (e.g., HubSpot, Chartbeat, Buffer, native platform insights)
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with video content creation and distribution best practices
  • Experience with social platforms including Bluesky, Instagram, YouTube, X (Twitter), Facebook, Threads, LinkedIn, Reddit and TikTok. Experience launching accounts on emerging platforms and growing audience a plus.

Work Environment
This is a full-time role based out of our Washington, D.C. office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary Range: $95,001-115,001
