With one of the largest listed defence company market capitalisations in Australia and having raised approximately $250m in 2024 alone, DroneShield is undergoing hypergrowth stage, fuelled by rapidly increasing use of drones for nefarious applications, from battlefield, to terrorism, to contraband delivery and commercial espionage.

This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Pyrmont, Sydney. There are approximately 320 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 400 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Denmark, Germany and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.


About the role

DroneShield's Design Team is expanding and we are looking for a Junior Industrial Designer to join the team in Sydney, NSW.

The position will report to the Design Engineering Lead and represents a unique opportunity to design sophisticated, leading-edge equipment and technology within the defence space. DroneShield has a strong foundation in Industrial Design with various industry-leading products performing with militaries and government agencies around the world.


Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations 

  • Support the design and development of new products from concept through to production
  • Conduct research and feasibility studies that support the core product development
  • Collaborate with product, systems and hardware engineering teams to integrate mechanical and electronic requirements
  • Preparing prototypes and mock-ups for testing and evaluation
  • Contribute to products at all stages of the product lifecycle cycle
  • Liaise with suppliers and fabricators to resolve design or manufacturing challenges
  • Assist in maintaining design and assembly documentation, CAD models, BOMs, and revision control within the PDM/PLM system
  • Actively build design skills and stay up to date with C-UAS/defence industry, materials and technologies

Qualifications, Experience and Skills 

  • A degree in a relevant product/industrial design discipline
  • A portfolio showcasing your design process and presentation skills
  • Good ideation and sketching skills to clearly communicate your ideas
  • An understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Efficient with Software tools - SolidWorks, and Adobe CC (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Expertise with product visualisation and rendering (Keyshot preferred)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, deliver and meet deadlines
  • Australian citizenship is preferred for Baseline and potential NV1 clearance
